Hit-and-run toddler victim Yueyue passes away

yueyue-intensivecare.jpg Yueyue, the toddler that sparked an outpouring of sympathy across China and the world this week, passed away this morning at 12:32am. The incredibly sad news was announced by a briefing at the hospital at 8:30am this morning. Yueyue was treated for seven days and nights in intensive care, but despite the best medical treatment available, she simply could not survive her injuries.

The hospital states that although they used the best-available resources from military and civilian experts, her injuries were simply too severe. The major cause of death was brain failure, which caused her major organs to shut down. The hospital "deeply regrets the loss, but thanks everyone for their concern and attention."

Our thoughts are with Yueyue's family as they deal with their loss. Outcry over the shocking display of heartless apathy in the double hit-and-run last week will undoubtedly continue as news of Yueyue's death reverberates throughout China.

We'll leave you with this, from an editorial published in ifeng:

This little angel belongs in paradise not in a cold world, right now she will be happy and blessed. She came to this world, let us remember her name, Wang Yue. All the best.

Yueyue won't be forgotten. Write your RIP messages here.

UPDATE: Yueyue's parents engage lawyer to sue drivers.

Its NORMAL in CHina with low income workers/migrant workers parents not keeping an eye on their kids ,
they have to earn a living while the children strolling alone the
streets. The ONLY THING I CAN ADD IS THAT AFTER LIVING IN CHINA FOR
6YEARS I THOUGHT I HAVE SEEN IT ALL AND WOULD NOT  BE SURPRISED BUT THIS
INCIDENT REALLY GOT ME SHOCKED ONCE AGAIN BY CHINESE PEOPLE AND IT
PROVES AGAIN THAT CHINESE PEOPLE ETHICAL AND MORALE STANDARDS FAR MORE
FORM BEING DEVELOPED DESPITE ALL THE "DEVELOPMENT TALK" HAVE BEEN GOING ON AROUND CHINA.   LOOK AT THIS THIS IS ONE MORE EXAMPLE OF HOW NOT DEVELOPED THIS COUNTRY IS AND HOW PRIMITIVE THE PEOPLE ARE.
  • poopoom
RIP yue yue, you will be greatly missed. WOW, if i were to see ANYONE lying on the street, hurt, i would go out of my way to help them no matter what, and the fact that it was a 2 year old girl, really breaks my heart. i can't even imagine the pain that poor little girl was in. if just a little scratch hurts little kids, can you imagine two trucks. and the 18 peaple who just walked past her like she was a run over cat on the street, should all be ashamed of themselves.
  • victor frias
please   justice !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!justice is not for her family, justice is for humanity and dignity of human beings, because that's an insult to human reason that it was an act unconscious and animal.
  • I feel very sorry for this kid...never got to live life.
  • sad
  • Nothing to blame with the mother...the 1st person to blame was the guy driving the Car who first bang the little girl..in the video it is very clear the guy knows that the little girl was in the middle of the street,,& he did not even try to stop,..instead he intentionaly hit the little girl & then he did it again on the rear tire.....2nd to blame was the Uncivilsed 18 people ...3rd to blame was guy drivn in the second car.....in short those 20 uncivilised people should be punished & beheaded....

    And now I am broken...

To hear the death of someone so innocent that they never claimed the chance to see the world beyond their still-budding youth has torn me in many ways that it hurts just to think about it.  A heart un-mendable by all the remaining love in the world, but tortured by the growing hatred.  I really believed that in some way, somehow, a miracle was going to happen and that Yue was going to follow the road to recovery and one day she would be on her feet again, to play once more and live her life again although altered.  But to hear of her death revived fresh tears in the pit that was once reserved with a sense of hatred towards the drivers that committed the barbaric act on her, and only one caring about her but the other only caring about how much money he was going to be out of.

This makes me wonder just how much humanity is really left in the world and how much has dissipated from human hearts to where acts like this are succeeded and not justified?  I wonder where we are on this path of existence to where there are those who will commit sin and not care one way or another?  How corrupted have some of us become to let callousness and cold-blooded events happen?

    I am in pieces...

Little Yueyue has touched me in a way I never thought possible. Watching
only 4 seconds of the horrific video was the worst I could have done.
It replays over and over in my head. I have cried everyday thinking of
her. I keep seeing her helpless body laying there before the rear tire
runs her over again. How can people be so careless and cold-hearted. Is
this what the human race has become? She was an innocent sweet child
that had her life taking from her, because of careless idiots. She lay
here suffering and crying while people walked her by like she was trash.
I wouldn't care if I thought I would be blamed for the incident or have
to pay money or whatever excuse the passer-bys are saying, it's a hurt
child laying there. HELP HER! I really feel like if the first van would
have stopped as soon as he knocked her down, she would probably still be
alive. I hate to say this, but this wouldn't have happened like this in
America. God Bless you Yueyue. I'm so sorry the drivers and people on
the streets thought your value of life was worthless. I wish I could
have saved you. I will always remember what happened to you. I hope your
family finds peace and justice. RIP baby girl.

    - Sincerely, a Mississippi girl.

    R.I.P baby Yueyue.

This is a horrible tragedy.  Where is the love for humankind?

Thank you Mrs.Chen Xianmei, the only person who tried to save her, out of 18 passerby’s.  Please don't listen to the people that are saying you helped the child for money or fame...they are mentally unbalanced. You did the right thing, and your country should treat you like the hero that you are!

My condolences to the family and friends of baby Yueyue, may she never be forgotten, I know I will never forget her…

May this tragedy that was viewed by the world be a terrible reminder, that this
form of behavior- the total lack of regard for human life- is the lowest, most uneducated, cowardly, and barbaric behavior a society could display.
It represents their values, and a lack of basic education on human empathy, compassion, and courage on doing what is morally right. More education is needed on human rights.

Where was baby Yueyue, respect for her precious life from her fellow citizens?
  • So why is it that humans are not motivated to do something to change the world until AFTER something tragic happens?

Shame on government in china, you're a wealthy country yet your law is so ignorant. so many building built like a ghost town because noone can afford it. they should use the taxpayer's money to help people who is injured and can't afford to pay for the hospital not to the building where they can't afford to live in anyway.
  • anonymous2121

I'm proud of my country(Philippines) because even though it is not rich, the people won't allow such thing to happen.

    amen to that 'kababayan"!
  • Do you even know guys the essence of a good Samaritan? I bet not as some of you have chosen to justify the reactions of those 18 (in)human beings. I say this because one of the very good traits of a Human Being is COMPASSION, which by the way those 18 (in)human beings lack. Hence....INHUMAN.

A Good Samaritan knows that by taking the role he/she is risking his/her own life to save another person whose life is in great danger, that is known as being SELFLESS. How much more to a two-year old child?

This is not about culture and religion. It is about being a HUMAN BEING. Help is help no matter how you spell it and what your religious affiliations is. I agree with Arnold Abad when he said "If you want to do something there is always a way. But if you do not want to do it, there are thousands of excuses." Excuses are what (in)human beings say to justify their actions.

People over there should take a crash course in RED CROSS. One of their basics.....is to SHOUT FOR HELP...a cashless effort any HUMAN BEINGS can do.

I think in the end it was better for the poor little thing to die than to live paralysed and with brain damage. Maybe the shock of this incident will have a positive influence on the Chinese public, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it. Rest in peace.

My little girl is almost one years old. I look at her and I can not imagine, something happens to her like this and nobody wants to help her. I get so angry thinking of poor YueYue, and people just turn their heads. We are talking about a little innocence child! How can you live with yourself, knowing you could help her.  I wish the parents all the strength to wear this enourmous loss. May God give Yue yue the best place in Heaven.
  • Hit and run is not uncommon in China. People are afraid to help because of the Chinese law that could hold them accountable for the injured person's medical bills or even as a suspect in the crime. There have been other children who suffered the same fate as YueYue but their tragedies weren't publicized. Poor YueYue happened to be caught on video. When will the people stand up to the government and demand the law be changed so YueYue did not die in vain? The current law allowing good samaritans to be held accountable should be ended and a new law enacted that makes it a crime to not offer some form of assistance when encountering an injured person.
  • TheRealCannibal
Horrible.  I hope she is in a better place now, where people care.  Poor little angel.

GET ALL THOSE PEOPLE INVOLVED ARRESTED AND JAILED NOW. Stop explaining their behaviors, what we need is a moral introspect.
  • arnold abad
I've read all the comments here and viewpoints. The people cannot do anything IF it is really true that you cannot help someone in distress as you will be included as a suspect. But still, the long time that passed when not even a single one shouted something like - "Hey!.. there's a little girl here lying in the street with blood all over the area. This kid might belong to you! I can't help her coz you all know how the law is in chinky land!.. "  It is not an excuse. Despite having two consecutive days of nightmare after watching this very dsiturbing clip, I watched it again to see everyone's point of view.  It is still not an excuse to abandon a helpless little girl regardless of what law there is. If you want to do something there is always a way. But if you do not want to do it, there are thousands of excuses.
  • dreamripples
I hear you, brother. Those drivers CHOSE to escape from their crimes and those people CHOSE to pretend that they did not see a girl lying in a pool of her own blood on the street.

These are sad times. I wouldn't be surprised if God decides to send another Great Flood soon. RIP Yue Yue. :(
  • Maybe people living in China are blind. For one, one of the driver's there hit a child. And it's not even a highway. Second, 18 people seemed to not see her. So I believe they must be blind.
  • H Quah
    1) The Chinese Govt should change & set new laws to prevent good samaritans from being wrongfully accused (or charged in court) of "causing
hurt / injury" to the person he/she is trying to help (or had already helped).

    2) If hospitals had to demand payment first before they are willing to treat
injured or sick patients, then govt should draft new laws & policy to solve
these issues; instead of letting a seriously injured/sick to suffer or die while waiting for medical fees to be paid in advance.
  • mickeylei23
I hate what they did to Yue Yue. They've hit her twice and some just pass her by and did not bother to help... She never deserve to die.. But what if, it will happen to your child? Still don't even care to help and save the life of that person? Hope this will open our heart and minds for what happen to Baby Yue Yue (Wang Yue)... This is for you Baby Yue Yue... We hope and pray that there will be justice for you... We won't forget you... Be happy and feel safe 'cause you are now with God's paradise... You will be our little Angel... God is with you now...May you rest in peace!!!
  • SomeAnonymousGuy
Again, I feel I may have to take the devil's advocate role here.

I believe that at least some of the people that passed by wanted to do something but perhaps did not know what to do.  What would we have them do?  lift the child, risking further injury?  Ideally the best thing to do would be to call for medical attention - let the experts do things right.

But back to reality: what ticks me off is not so much that some folks did not do anything, but that they didn't stay to ask what happened, or give a crap about what happened.

Also, why the heck are some people saying they are disappointed with CHINA? Do you think that this only happened in China?  Similar things have happened around the world.  Google "Kitty Genovese Syndrome".

I have a colleague who majored in Psychology at university and they did an experiment - having a lady pretend to be injured and the students noted the time it took for someone to take notice.  In some areas, it was instantaneous, but in a prominent business district it took HALF AN HOUR.

I do not fear for the Chinese.  I fear for humanity.

how this world will be? a little thing happen before their eyes and they act nothing happen?!!! when i know this news and heard that yue yue died.. i really wanna angry but i want to cry too. how could they didn't help! imagine if the victim is your child, and no one help!! are they have no brain? where's their heart?? i'm so disappointed with CHINA!!!

  • itommyyyy
Im guessing you never heard of Kitty Genovese, the incident at the New York's Central Park Parade, Brooklyn Hospital case, or Hugo Alfred Tale- Yax. Theres been plenty of cases that display the bystander effect in NYC.
  • SomeAnonymousGuy

    http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/c...

"The family of a female Chinese student who died after being beaten and sexually assaulted in New York City, the United States, arrived in the city Monday.Yao Yu’s mother and two other family members were granted visas and arrived at Newark Airport, three days after she was taken off life support.Police say Yao, 23, was walking home from a grocery store in Flushing, Queens, when Carlos Salazar Cruz, 28, hit her over the head with a pipe, dragged her into an alley and raped her. There were several passers-by, but none of them tried to stop the violence, according to anonymous sources.Police say Cruz was arrested in connection with Yao’s attack after a witness called 911 later.Yao spent nearly a week on life support following the May 16th attack.Earlier Monday, anti-crimes groups held a vigil against violence at the scene of her attack. They're urging others to report violence if they see it.Yao had arrived in New York on a student visa from China two months ago."Yup, nothing like it.
  • The Chinese student being attacked and no one intervening is an unfortunate single isolated incident. It is not common place. What happened to YueYue happens all the time in China. People injured by hit and run drivers are left to die and not helped because the law will either hold the good samaritan accountable as a suspect and/or force them to pay the medical bills.
  • SomeAnonymousGuy
All the time in China? How about all the time in the world? I've seen it happen here in the Philippines. In fact, here, people would go after the driver and beat him up before they try to help the kid. I'm serious.
  • Patrick Griffin
You do realize that there's a massive difference in helping a two year old after she's been run over and intervening in an attack? You could be killed in the latter while there's zero danger in the former.

Furthermore, the area in question where Yao Yu was attacked is predominatedly composed of immigrants from the mainland.
  • SomeAnonymousGuy
Yes I do realize that. The point is that no one called 911 until after the attack. Surely it isn't too difficult to walk by THEN call 911? I have seen my share of accidents. Predominantly composed of immigrants or not, they couldn't ALL have been mainland immigrants. Flushing is also composed of koreans, hong kong chinese immigrants and other non oriental races. My point was about about diffusion of responsibility or bystander effect.

  • carmen ly
You're asking for the life of 20 or so people, because they selfishly ignored the girl, They were trying to avoid paying the medical fees. In china whoever you bring to the hospital, it's your responsibility to pay the medical fees. The two drivers crossed the line, but the people who didn't help her shouldn't be "imprisoned" Yes they should have helped her, and i completely agree that they should definately be punished for what they have done/ignored. However, I think you're immaturely wishing misfortune on people who are already misfortunate. No one, should ever be beheaded unless commited a sin so great that they are a threat to all life on earth. Personally, Rather than 'beheading' everyone, The government should change how they act. The government's choices affect the people, and they acted as they did because of the government.
  • The government needs to change the laws so YueYue did not die in vain. There should not be a law that makes a good samaritan responsible for an injured person's medical bills. There should be a law that makes it a crime to not help in some way. In Yue Yue's case all the passerbys could have surrounded her body so the second car didn't run over her, they could have screamed for help, and at least one would have had a cell phone to call the police and an ambulance.
  • ignoring sin, is just as bad as actually committing the act.
  • carmen ly
In a way that's false. I'm not trying to sound like the antagonist here. I did actually tear up when i heard that she died. But try to look at yourself in those peoples place. Someone with little to no money, who can't afford to even go to to hospital none the less bring in another person to the hospital. Yes they shoul dhave done something and not let her die the way she did, at all in fact. But really, you can't imagine the life that they're going through. In all honesty yes i feel they should be punished in some way, but it really is immature to say that they are the blame for the whole act, they weren't helping but because of how the government is structured, It's structured in the sense of "every man for himself". If you bring an injured person to the hospital, it's responsibility to provide the medical fees, And if you live in america, then you know how much medical fees can amount to.
  • AJ_Gruss
a tragedy and a human life wasted. Those 18 people who neglected her need to be punished.
  • terroir
No, I don't think they need to be punished (it's been reported that many of them have been identified and ostracized) as the same "punishment" is happening to the hero of the story, who has been shamed and left town.

I think Chinese should look at this and decide: who are we?  The concepts of face and 中庸 - the Golden Mean/Mediocrity - how are these out-dated concepts from a feudal society relevant in today's modern society useful, same with the words of long-dead philosophers who mused on the best way to rule the unwashed masses - how are their words relevant to us?

Again: Chinese don't have to ask these questions.  They sure haven't asked these questions for 5000 years in a row by this point.  China has a high GDP, an aircraft carrier, the purchase of all that US debt, and no unifying ideal of what it means to be Chinese.  This has happened before, and will happen again.

There is a Chinese dream.  And it let this little girl down.
  • RUSHOUR1
You failed to ask people to “look at this and decide: who are we” after same tragedy happened in NYC last year with even more “heartless”
passer-bys. You also dont remember that this 18+2 are the very people who you think deserved “democracy” and that when the same masses in Zengcheng City rioted only 40 km away from Foshan in June, you guys called it as revolution.
  • Krist Hall
Who in this thread said that?
  • cubicspline
Mencius said, “All men have a mind which cannot bear to see the sufferings of others.“My meaning may be illustrated this way: if men
suddenly see a child about to fall into a well, they will without exception experience a feeling of alarm and distress—not so they may gain the favor of the child's parents, nor to seek the praise of their neighbors and friends, nor from fear of a reputation of having been unmoved by such a thing.
“From this case, we may perceive that the feeling of commiseration is essential to man, that the feeling of shame and dislike is essential to man, that the feeling of modesty and complaisance is essential to man, and that the feeling of approving and disapproving is essential to man.
  • But, if we are to judge by these 18 people, Mencius was profoundly wrong.

Apparently, in the PRC now, we are dealing with a new Chinese culture where the SHAME to NOT ACT, that he identified in his time (2300 years ago), has been rooted out.

18 people prove this catastrophic point.

So does this new shamelessness define China Rising?  And is this the CULTURE that the Central Committee is so diligently preparing to defend in this month's meetings?
  • cubicspline
It may well be true that Mencius was wrong. I'm not a psychologist, but as far as I know empathy is something that has to be learned in childhood and is by no means given to all human beings. Xunzi's pessimistic theory that human nature is evil (i.e. governed by passions and selfishness) and that good behavior is the result of civilization and learning is probably closer to the truth.

But this is not the point I was trying to make. The long-dead philosophers and traditional Chinese morality are not necessarily to blame for this tragic incident, as the poster above insinuated. Confucianism (as far as I understand it) is an attempt to build a good society based on virtue rather than self-interest. Confucius also heartily detested all false pretense of virtue (i.e. saving face and having an evil heart). Buddhism and Daoism are also hard to blame for utterly selfish behavior.
I think the whole incident has more to do with the harsh political conditions which have often been prevalent in China. It is probably hard to grasp the pychological damage done by the Cultural Revolution or the Great Leap Forward. Try to get by on your own or with your family and keep a low profile. This kind of attitude is probably still very helpful today.
  • ivan_the_tyrant
Not really much you can do...

Anyways, I just wanted to amend your figure of "18" to "20". Don't forget her parents, who were MIA for the 10 or so minutes she was lying there.
  • terroir
Perfect.  Just read this article, shrug and move on as though it's a little girl lying on the ground, dying.

The shrugging means you had a physical reaction to it.
  • ivan_the_tyrant
Don't you dare imply that I would have done such a thing.  That's fucking low, and my previous post gave you no reason whatsoever to pick a fight.  The post being a comment on how there's no legal recourse here, seeing as though no laws exist that compel bystanders to action, even if that action is just calling an ambulance.

It also addressed the fact that no one seems to be placing any blame on the girl's parents, or at least her mother, who from the video we can see was clearly in the vicinity.

In sum, your response was unnecessarily presumptuous, callous and rude.

It was an accident, accidents unfortunately happen...you can't blame parents for such tragic things that happen so often around the world...they are punished enough and for sure make themselfes responsible for that, that should be enough!

I was so sad about hearing that and i wish I hadn't watched the video. It made me cry a lot and I could hardly sleep at night with the curel picture of little YueYue holding her hands up high as the van was so near :'(

this shouldn't happen. It is so sad. I hoped soo much that the doctors would fix her...no one deserves that! :(

Yueyue won't be forgotten.  But the question remains: why did she have to die?

We don't have to ask this question, but then are our tears enough?
