The Sichuanese city of Aba, home of the Kirti Monastery that’s had 9 Tibetan monks self-immolate since March, is currently witnessing a huge show of police wearing riot gear, as seen in a new video from the AFP.
Don’t be fooled, however, by the menacing guns and martial look of the police out and about in Aba, there’s nothing to worry about. Or so the Global Times tells us, in an article likening monks who self-immolate to suicide bombers:
Religious persecution does not exist in China. Chinese society always cautiously protects the freedom of religious beliefs. However, a few Buddhists in Tibet mix the political elements into the religious life, in order to cooperate with the Dalai Lama’s plan to split Tibet away from China. In essence, this is a betrayal of the spirit of Buddhism.
If there was a Razzies for Journalism, we’d wager the Global Times would be a yearly contender in all the major categories, including “Best Bullshit Fact Denying Op-ed” and “Achievement in Bald-faced Lying.”
