Hard-hitting journalism of the day, from where else but our favourite city newspaper? Shanghai Daily’s Xu Chi has scored a major scoop meeting disgruntled donkey-sized laowais who have confided in her that they never seem to be able to find condoms of the right size in this city:
A European who asked not to be named told Shanghai Daily that the problem has existed for many years and that he always has to bring condoms from his homeland.
He said one of his female friends got pregnant and had to get an abortion because her boyfriend couldn’t find a “proper size” condom.
“Many foreigners find it embarrassing to talk about the problem, but it’s still there unsolved while posing a danger to us of catching venereal diseases or having unwanted babies in unprotected sex,” he said.
Xu spoke with condom manufacturers Durex, Jissbon and Okamoto, and found that only one of them, Okamoto, used to sell XL-sized condoms. They’ve since given up because apparently, there aren’t enough XL-sized men to make it worth their while. In the meanwhile, a spokesperson with Jissbon explained that while producing condoms of different sizes is very easy, they produce condoms in just one size to save on production and delivery costs.
