First driver who ran over Yueyue formally detained by Foshan police

hu-jun-yueyue.jpg
24-year-old Hu Jun is married and has a daughter.
Foshan's Nanhai District Procuratorate has formally approved the arrest of Hu Jun, the first of two drivers who ran over two-year-old toddler, Yueyue, in the double hit-and-run that has gripped the nation and the world this week. The formality paves the way for the next step in the legal process of a case that will be highly watched by all quarters of Chinese society.

24-year-old truck driver Hu Jun, from Feicheng near Tai'an in Shandong province, was seen on CCTV footage knocking down the toddler, and then running over her a second time with a rear wheel as he made his escape. Seven minutes, 18 bystanders, and a subsequent hit by another vehicle later, help for Yueyue finally arrived in the form of 58-year-old scrap peddler Chen Xianmei, and later, Yueyue's mother.

A journalist from Taishan Evening News made her way to Jiangzhuang Village in Wangguadian Town off Feicheng to speak to the family of Hu Jun. Hu's mother, Zhang Yuchun, had been crying rivers of tears. She said that the family first found out about the accident on the afternoon of October 16, two days after it happened.

"That day, Hu Jun called up his father, saying he had seen a video of someone running over a child. He later realised that he was that person in the van, but he didn't know at the time that there was a child on the floor," said Zhang.

Hu was shocked out of his wits, and was making the call to inform the family in case anything happened, added Zhang. Her husband, Hu Xuwei advised him to turn himself in to the police before flying to Guangdong that very evening. "Upon his arrival in Guangzhou, he was unable to get in touch with our son. I myself, don't know how to get online, and as I was unable to get posted on the latest developments, I could only sit and fret," she said.

The second of three children, and the only son, Hu Jun has been married for two years. In February this year, he moved with his wife and their then 50-day-old daughter to Foshan, against the wishes of his mother, to seek a better life. The couple ran a little store to make their living, and on the day of the accident, Hu was out running errands for the business.

"All the neighbours say my son is a good man, an honest man. Since he was young, he has never told a lie, or gotten into a fight with anybody."

"We hope that Yueyue's parents can forgive my son. Our entire family is so sorry for all the hurt that he has caused them. Now our only wish is that the police can be more lenient to our son," said Zhang as she wiped away her tears.

This is the last update I have read on the driver... has anyone heard if he is being sent to jail ? for how long ? they said if he is charged max 7 years ..... but nothing since to say he has been charged ??? the lowlife should be excuted for what he has done. teach other drivers that hitting a child with your car, not stopping is WRONG!! as far as im concerned from what I seen on the footage he killed her.
  • He is obviously lying. He deliberately ran over Yue Yue a second time to try to "save" his own ass. Then he tried to extort money from Yue Yue's family. I don't generally believe in the death penalty, but I'll make an exception for this guy. And now they say he is married? With a child? So whats this we hear about his cell phone call with a "girlfriend"?  This guy gets worse by the minute. Yue Yue had every right to live, yet because of this creep she will never know the joy of friendships. She will never know school. She will never know love, and life. Yet this creep lives. What a monstrous crime on top of another.

I'm thinking no one's caught onto his ruse yet except for the people who followed the story from article one until now.  Jun's family is trying to get him out of the frying pan by concocting a sob story to make it seem like he was a good guy in the wrong place at the wrong time.  What debunks him was from him trying to give Yue's family hush money, but failed (He didn't extort money from Chichang and his wife, he was trying to buy his way out of trouble so they wouldn't report him to the authorities). What really nails him was that he was hoping that she was a corpse so that all he would have to do is pay funeral costs and not medical expenses, that's where running over her with his rear wheel came from.  Statement (I'm paraphrasing): If she was hurt, I would be out of thousands of yuan in medical expenses.  But if she were dead, I would only be out of what equates to 3k U.S. dollars.  That's what kills the story his family conjured.
I don't think he really cared that he hit her, but I'm not one to judge his alignment.  Karma will come knocking at his door, the reaper will stand in line.
  • wow Hu Jun you are really 1 piece of crap. making me hate u even more than  I alrdy do. Initially you said you are sorry and even said in China it is better to leave the victim dead than alive to avoid more compensation. Now you say you have no idea that is a child? *applause*

*Wow I saw a video a girl got run and roll over by a van! OOPS that was me! tada~*

dear Hu Jun can you please for a minute look at the pic of the healthy yue yue and the condition of hers on hospital bed after you ran her down?

you must get the death sentence.

As I read this story I feel no sympathy towards this man, he killed Yue Yue, he’s first thought wasn’t concern for her but how much he would have to pay if she lived or if she die. Of course his parents are trying to save his skin. He is trying to himself. The possible max 7-year sentence is just a kick in the face. He deserves nothing more than to get the death penalty or rot in jail for the rest of his life!  All I can picture in my mind are images of Yue Yue from the footage, what this poor child went through is heartbreaking. His actions on that day displayed nothing more than his careless intention to kill the child! He says he didn’t know? Watch the video. He knew exactly what he has done. So the video that millions have viewed of the incident is totally wrong? What we witnessed was actually this man being the good, honest kind man, he is a hero he hit Yue Yue then rushed out and called for help immediately and little Yue Yue has made a full recovery and still with us today, he did not hit her then stop and decided to run her over by the van’s rear wheels, left her on the road like a piece of rubbish in enormous pain surrounded in her own blood to met the faith of getting run over by another vehicle that crushes her legs and ignored by 18 people…this man …yep he is a good honest man. RIP Yue Yue, you are forever in our hearts.

ಠ_ಠ  So now he was running errands when he hit Yue?  I thought he was on the phone with his supposed "broken up with girlfriend" when he hit her.  Which one is it?  Quite frankly, I think he's lied twice now.  I smell a C.Y.A. excuse.
  • i am still mourning for Yueyue..and I do pray that justice be served on her favor. for the two drivers: you are heartless, heartless, heartless!!!!
  • Similar stories.  Young chinese guy, running over people and returning for the kill.   The problem with a society like that is - it's just a matter of time before someone kills you out of economics.

Dedicated to Yue Yue our Symbol of hope in Humanity. Your tears, terror , pain , suffering and passing away will not be in vain, you have touch the Heart of  millions of  viewer, and others across the World irrespective of Culture, Color,  Race, Origin and Religion. You will be remember forever for bringing awareness and hope to Humanity and as Savior of Chinese Civilization, Culture and Morality.
Do you belief this 24 yrs old scum hu jun( first Van driver)?.His useless family
trying to save his skin- now they know the pain for possibility of losing their own son.
The video footage clearly shows, he drive slowly then accelerate to  kill and backup a little, purposely and slowly crushing the terrified poor Yue Yue in pain, bath in blood, with his rear wheel for the final kill.
He was reportedly say, he pay less if Yue Yue is killed..
His motive is to kill Yue Yue and should be sentence to death.
Justice must not only seem to be done but must be done.
If he is a good, well educated in China and honest man as claimed by his parents and hopeless society, then China is gone and only good for history.
Is the live of Kids or adult in China so cheap (20,000 Yuan or 7yrs jail if killed),
no wonder, Kids get killed like dirt, because the driver(killer) can afford to pay.
They actually go for the kill instead of paying maintenance fees of the victim.
Engaging a lawyer and court proceeding will probably cause more.
The said case are not isolated cases, I remember clearly, 4 years ago when I visited
China our tourist guide told us to be very careful when crossing road, the
driver go for the kill to avoid paying victim maintenance fees.
Probably this have being going on since the lopsided flawed law was passed.
After the passing of good Samaritan law,3 more innocent child was killed
5 yrs boy old Maoke of Sichuan , 3 yrs old boy Yang Yang and 3 ys old Yue Yue
( same name as 2yrs poor Yue Yue) of Guanchou, in eerie and similar circumstance, the driver goes for the  kill.
The root cause is the drivers go for the kill because of the lopsided flawed law,
yet the so call professional  lawmakers and leaders is still in denial or sleeping mode , too a shame to admit their fault. Shame to these so call professional lawmakers and leaders.
The fine should be increase maybe to maximum of 500000 yuan(you decide how much) and the jail term increase to maybe maximum of 50 years depending on severity of cases.
Those with motive to kill, like little Yue Yue case and others, should be sentence to death.
The propose law should be passed and implemented immediately to prevent recurrence of similar tragedy.
You need more surveillance cameras and security personnel ( your police or military personnel) at all strategic location( you have the resource) - you also have child kidnapping problem.
It will probably take decades for your dagger of conscience to strike your leaders, lawmakers and the general public to improve your current level of decaying cultural value and morality. Many innocent live will be lost by then if no immediate measure is taken.
What is the use of promoting Confucius teaching to other Countries when your very own citizens ignore the profound teaching?

This is such bullshit. I hope no one believes him. RIP Little Yueyue. I am still mourning over your tragic death. I am sick over this. I hope the China's justice system rips this dude into pieces.
  • Anameda
What would be justice is if he felt exactly what Yue felt the day he hit her.  Every bit of 10 minutes worth of agonizing pain and being left to die on the street.  You don't know what a person's felt until you've felt it yourself.  Maybe that would deter more child hit-and-murder (not run, murder) cases by drivers if the punishment is "Feel what they felt".

But that would be too cruel for even the humane of humane people to wish upon wrongdoers.  But then again...maybe not...
  • He has a daughter?

    I smell karma.
  • Anameda
Karma's going to bite him in the ass for this.  Heaven forbid if it happens to his little girl, which would end in cruel irony of Karma turning on her and commencing with the "eye for an eye" scenario (It has a LOT of ways for doing that) -knocks on wood, hope that doesn't happen-.  But then again, the reaper's not through yet...
  • ShanghaiPete
...you see, this is the particularly tragic part of this. Hu Jun was doing everything the Chinese system has taught him. He learned well from the Chinese educational system, from his parents, from his teachers, from his government. He did everything a Chinese person is supposed to do, according to the new Chinese ethos.

And this is what comes of it.
