Last minute Halloween costume shopping in Shanghai: A refresher

infinite-joy-rabbit-costume.jpg If you still haven't secured yourself a costume for our party tomorrow night, check out our guide from years past. All that stuff is still relevant. But if you're looking for even MORE options, here are a few stores and websites we've stumbled upon more recently:

Infinite Joy (欢乐无限)

Okay, most of you might shy away from Taobao immediately, and if you honestly can't make yourself read the Taobao Field Guide or Google translate the thing or bother a Chinese friend enough to help you, this shop actually has a physical address in Shanghai. So you can either order same-day delivery from them online, or hoof it down to Minhang. A few minutes on their Taobao store revealed some pretty awesomely terrible costumes, so it's worth a browse. (We hope somebody out there bites the 380RMB bullet and buys one of these.)

Getting there: The closest metro stop is Jinjiang Park on Line 1 (one stop south of the South Railway Station.) They're right next to ECNU's Science and Tech school.

200 Meilong Lu, near Longzhou Lu (徐汇区梅陇路200号靠近龙州路化工一村195号)

Drop Dead Sexy

If you're strapped for a costume and would rather go somewhere besides Holiday House, this can be a good last-minute fall back. Although most of their stuff is boring sexy cops or sexy nurses, their central location is hard to beat and they'll probably have a few accessories to inspire something more interesting. Check out their website here.

Yimei Fashion Plaza - Shop B182 1st Floor // 1699 West Nanjing Road, Jing'an Temple Plaza (Across from Jiu Guang Department Store / Metro line 2, Jing'an Temple station, Exit 5) 伊美时尚广场B182店铺 上海市静安区南京西路1699号静安寺广场内
(久光百货对面 / 地铁2号线静安寺站, 5号出口)

Seriously Shanghai, come out and party with us and BEAN on Friday. If you bring your baby, we'll even autograph it. See you guys tomorrow night!

  • I found an AMAZING website that has a lot of very original and CREATIVE costume ideas !!! I was so excited when I found it because it gave me a ton of ideas. I put the link below for you.

So does the average Shanghainese girl need to bring a shovel along on the 31st as a physical prop, or is "gold digger" more a state of mind?

  • ivan_the_tyrant

HAHHAHA oh wait nevermind, that's a tired, stale joke that serves no purpose except to spew shit unnecesarily.  Better luck tomorrow.

  • terroir

Speaking of false generalization, you're mixing up the local phrase "我们是上海人“ with acts of charity and civic pride.  As such, the "whoring up" for Hallowe'en of prospective "visa miners” is still a relevant issue since it's Hallowe'en every day of the year in 伤害 city.  Objection overruled.

Great "Harlod and Kumar" reference, though; it was also a good movie nobody watched.

  • ivan_the_tyrant

I don't even...do you even understand your ideas?  Charity, civic pride, whoring up, writing "We are Shanghainese people" in characters for the hell of it.  Silly terroir, you're delving dangerously close to RushHour1-level logic!

Also, the first Harold and Kumar grossed $23,936,908 worldwide, with the sequel bringing in $43,327,445.  Seems like more than a few people made it out to theaters.  I wasn't aware that I was referencing it, though.

It's a meta reference. The original Better Luck Tomorrow movie (directed by Justin Lin) based on a murder of high achieving Asian-American student in LA by other high achieving Asian-American students starred John "Harold" Cho; so when the EXTREME dudes in Harold and Kumar said "Better Luck Tomorrow" they were referencing Cho's star turn in the original movie.

Oh nice, I really liked Better Luck Tomorrow.  Seen that movie a ton of times.  SPOILER ALERT:

John Cho gets it pretty good in that one. Fucking Steve and his motorcycle.
