Watch: New Jordan ad, featuring Melo, CP3 and D-Wade in Beijing!
Well, ever so briefly in Beijing, anyway. Regardless, this slick little piece of corporate advertising made our pre-Halloween Party afternoon.
Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony (who flew over to China during the summer for some panda-hugging) are all of course currently locked-out basketball superstars, and have to play in all sorts of summer rec leagues to keep their springs from rusting, including a pickup game with hipsters in Williamsburg, a Jewish Under 40 league, the Bayou Women's League, and finally a stop at Drum Tower Park in Beijing.
It's a pretty great concept: your favorite stars are doing whatever they can to play basketball in the face of possible cancellation of this season, and we're won over simply because we haven't seen them play in forever. The excellent soundtrack by Awol One doesn't hurt either.
And all the Chinese signifiers are there, packed into a few short frames: The Forbidden City, foreign text on street signs, and some Chinese-looking architecture establish place, before we see Wade and Melo together on the court, greeting Beijing's street-ballers. Of course, Wade has to show up (a yangrouchuan'r sign is featured in the frame, and there's even a shot of jianbingguozi making!) wearing a Dongdan Flying Squirrels jersey (东单飞鼠).
The ad is made even more palatable by featuring a laughing baby, which is of course obligatory in the majority of Chinese commercials. Color us impressed.
