Weibo is just atwitter with food related “scandals” today, so we’ve collected some here for your perusal:
Bacteria in your ice cream
Watch out for Mengniu ice cream!
The Guangdong Industry and Commerce Office recently revealed the other day that “Inner Mongolia Mengniu Dairy Corporation” has failed testing on their line of hazelnut chocolate ice cream bars.
A large batch has been shown to contain levels of bacteria exceeding industry standards.
Does Hot Pot cause baldness?
A story aired on Chinese TV recently claims that a 38-year-old-man who loved eating spicy hot pot became bald due to his obsession.
In the video, a doctor gives a half-assed explanation (with fancy infographics to back him up) that after consuming so much spicy hot pot, the man’s hair follicles secreted toxins which created scaling on the skin and subsequent hair loss.
Along with the fact that nothing on Google, or anywhere else in the news, mentions spicy foods causing hair loss (contrarily finding forums full of balding men suggesting eating spicy foods is the cure), the millions of men with full heads of hair living and eating hot pot in Jiangsu and Sichuan serve as a pretty resounding counter-argument.
Garbage bag found in restaurant soup
An undoubtedly disgusted restaurant patron snapped this photo of a garbage bag floating in her boiled catfish soup. The restaurant is Honglajiao on Zhangyang Road (红辣椒, 张杨路店). No, it’s not kelp!
This photo brings a whole new meaning to the phrase “the food here is garbage.”
