We’re totally confused about this one, so someone please help us out. Last we heard, China was still upset with Norway enough that the Norwegian salmon industry was languishing as result.
You might when Chinese feelings were severely hurt after last year’s Nobel Peace Prize went to Chinese dissident Yu Nohu (who has a new book out about him, by the way), much to the displeasure of the government.
So it strikes us as quite the surprise when the weibo account of The Global Times, an official Chinese propaganda organ recently affectionately called “China’s Fox News” by Foreign Policy’s Christina Larsen, recently posted a weib declaring “So Norway is the most awesome country in the world after all!!!” (原来挪威才是全球最牛的国家!!!)
To back up this out-of-the-blue statement, The Global Times attached a deconstruction of the flag of Norway, highlighting all the other national flags that are actually contained within a section of the white-fimbriated blue Nordic cross on a red field design.
Countries found within Norway’s colors include Finland, Holland, Thailand, France, Indonesia and Poland (both of which are incorrectly highlighted in the flag of Norway, but whose red and white-barred flags are still present nonetheless).
We frankly don’t know what to make of it. The most logical conclusion would be that The Global Times is somehow trying to point out the unoriginality of the Norwegian flag, and that their “endorsement” is actually a dig, rather than a like.
Or could it be an allusion to the thawing of tense relations, now that one of China’s most vocal mouthpieces is briefly cooing about Norway’s all-encompassing flag? Color us intrigued.
