Shen Tong speaking in Tiananmen Square, 1989.
Shen Tong, a student leader from 1989’s revolution-that-wasn’t, has given up his day-to-day duties at his software firm to help the Occupy Wall Street kids organize their movement.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Shen has been holding planning meetings with protestors on a regular basis, while fulfilling the Omniscient Chinese Sage archetype, with one protestor describing the advice he gives to young protestors as “a lot of wise old man comments.”
Shen apparently ambled over to visit protestors in Zucotti Park in October, as so many
attention-grubbing politically-conscious celebrities have done in recent weeks, and then decided to devote himself to the cause, putting his job on hold to support La Revolución full-time.
However, Shen still describes himself as “dedicated but not yet committed” to the movement, while also noting the differences between his experiences in Tiananmen and New York’s Financial District:
“Last time we wanted a different China, we got shot at,” said Mr. Shen. “America can still afford to do this nicely.”
We personally can’t wait until Fox News starts decrying how the OWS movement is aided by nefarious foreign “black hands”, which is the same accusation the Chinese government used to discredit the Tiananmen Square protests. Wouldn’t that be something!
