Color us très, très jealous of these Francophilic Chinese elites. This collection of scholars, celebrities and entrepreneurs, who have attained a special I don’t know what quality with their proficiency in French, langage de la beauté, existentialisme, and luxury fashion accoutrements, deserve a hearty congratulations from us!
Except for Liu Ye, who recently starred as Mao in the Founding of a Republic. Even though he pronounces romantiques with the necessary gutturality, he still has a long way to go before he’s at a decent lady-wooing speaking level. Not that he needs to, though, since he’s already bagged a daughter of France already.
The video’s featured luminaries speak about what French means to them, saying it’s a colorful, beautiful and romantic language, all in order to promote the Year of French Language in China, which curiously only lasts nine months.
Quite true to form, the video has no English subtitles. The video makes us consider that the way we feel towards these particuliers chinois is how others might view yours truly’s decent proficiency in the King’s. Like my man Ed Said said, imperialism is the export of identity!
