The number of weibo users has now reached 300 million, according to the 11th China Cybermedia Forum.
While Twitter remains blocked in mainland China, many major portals like Sina, Netease, Sohu have all released their microblogging, or weibo (微博) services.
China has the biggest online community on earth with more than 485 million users. Weibo has accelerated the spread of information and made censorship much more difficult. On Sina Weibo, China’s most popular weibo service, over 250million users send more than 86mln tweets a day.
Many government branches and officials have also registered accounts to listen to and answer people’s concerns.
However, the state’s grip on this emerging service is also tightening. Another major concern for weibo service providers is money. No mature business model has been formed yet, which means weibo is still a money-burning venture.
