Two days ago, a video was uploaded to Youku titled “Changping (Fujian) government worker starves 90 year old mother.” The video, which shows an extremely emaciated old woman lying on a filthy tatami mat, has drawn sharp criticism from many who question how such an incomprehensible act could happen in 21st century China.
The 90-year-old woman, who was originally from Guangdong, had five sons and one daughter. Her husband passed away at a young age, and her oldest son and daughter-in-law played a large role in helping raise the family.
However, when the family split, the old woman was left in the care of her fourth son, who works for the Fujian Ministry of Trade office.
It was in his care that she rapidly deteriorated. Having advanced dementia/Alzheimer’s, she was unable to care for herself and was left, presumably to die, on a ratty tatami mat in a utility room on the 1st floor.
Her condition was only discovered near the end of September this year, when a niece found her on the floor and called the police. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she died soon after from severe malnutrition.
Though the son who neglected his mother was taken into custody by police, that seems to be little consolation for many who can only imagine what horrors the mother must have suffered through.
“The first time I saw this photo it was very shocking! I did not think in the twenty-first century, there could be such a thing!
I hope (those responsible) not only suffer harsh moral condemnation, but are also severely punished by law!”
The incident comes as a shock to many Chinese who have grown up with tradition dictating children be filial to their parents and care for them throughout old age. However, there may yet be more story to uncover, as many neighbors were shocked the son could be capable of such heartlessness.
“We will have to wait until there are more facts available, usually the son has been very filial towards his mother.”
