How do you damage the reputation of one of the nation’s top universities and its affiliates? Why, by letting stupid interns change the name of your institution’s cancer patients to make fun of their terminal illness, of course! The family of a patient at Fudan University’s Cancer Center is furious with the institution after receiving a hospital bill that refers to their loved one as “drop dead Zhang.”
The alteration was the result of a cashier intern’s earlier quarrel with the patient’s wife over a 14RMB hospital overcharge fee. The intern was able to change the name through the billing system, and vented her anger from the exchange with the quip.
The hospital has punished the intern by docking 10,000RMB of their wages, and the intern and her family have sent numerous apologies to the tumor patient’s family.
The family, however, won’t be happy until the apology letter is broadcast on the hospital’s information board, in true public shame form. The hospital remains defiant, however, refusing to disrupt normal operations to settle petty squabbles.
The name on the bill, 张去死 (zhāng qù sǐ) can be translated either as “Zhang, go die!”, “Go to hell Zhang!” or the more catchy “Drop dead Zhang!”
