Though it’s almost 2012, there’s still time for more brawls in 2011 right? On December 28th, around 10pm, a pretty nasty brawl broke out between chengguan and some vendors outside a Xujiahui mall here in Shanghai.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Zhaojiabang Road and Tianyaoqiao Road, in a square that is typically overrun with vendors hawking the typical wares of shoes and mobile phone accessories.
When the chengguang rolled up to clear out the square, one of the vendors got wise and threw a few remarks at the chengguan. As the argument escalated, more and more people joined in from both sides, and began pushing and shoving.
Shoving turned to hitting, and vendors and chengguan alike turned to hitting with pipes, bats, and stun batons. In the end, four vendors were injured, and one was sent to the hospital with minor head injuries.
We’ve been noticing a lot more chengguan patrols out and about lately, perhaps as a last-ditch resort to make up for past promises of crackdowns before 2012 new year’s resolutions have to be through up (because no one likes resolving to do the same thing they failed at the year before).
