Midweek Music Preview is our weekly rundown of everything happening on stages across the city. On the docket this week: Yuyintang pays you to check out some music, Simple Plan finally makes its Shanghai debut, more Scandinavian metal at Mao, and some free rock at Bee Dees. Read on for all the details, or head over to our calendar for more.
Live jazz @ Enoterra
Enoterra does live jazz every Wednesday and we can think of no better way to pass this hump day than a glass of wine and some brass. Call 5306-3400 to reserve a table.

Kaobang, Next Year’s Love & Portmanteau @ YYT
Next Year’s Love, Portmanteau, and Kaobang play Yuyintang on Friday. Local rock pulling us through the barren music wasteland that is January in Shanghai.

The Tetons @ Bee Dees
As usual, Beedees is dishing out tunes for free. This Friday head over to catch The Tetons, a solid rock trio featuring female vocals and the sheer geological power of their namesake Rocky Mountain range.
Free entry // 10pm // Bee Dees Music Bar // 433 Dagu Lu, near Chengdu Bei Lu (大沽路433号, 近成都北路)
1 RMB Challenge (CHINESE BANDS) @ YYT
By far the most interesting thing happening on the music scene this week is the two-day 1RMB Challenge concert at Yuyintang. Fun concept – they’re flipping things on their head and promising to pay YOU 1RMB simply for showing up and checking out some local music. They’re trying to get the word out to locals and expats alike that Shanghai actually has local bands. On Saturday, it’s a concert by locals for expats, on Sunday vis versa (that means you should be going to the concert on Saturday.) Here’s the lineup for Saturday: Baiyu, Prank, Sen Lin Mu, Dabei, and Loudspeaker.
– 1RMB // 9:30pm // Yuyintang // 851 Kaixuan Lu, by Yan’an Xi Lu ( 凯旋路851号, 近延安西路口)
Simple Plan @ Muse Mixing Room
Montreal pop punkers Simple Plan were supposed to swing by the Mixing Room last summer before heading to Japan’s Summer Sonic festival when the lead singer ran into some vocal problems and had to cancel the show. They’re back as promised, however, and will be at the Mixing Room this Saturday. Presale tickets here. Catch a free shuttle at 6:30pm from either Xintiandi (Madang & Zizhong Rd) or Yao Hua Road Metro Station Exit 4.
260RMB presale, 350RMB door // 8pm // Muse Mixing Room // Mercedes-Benz Arena, 1200 EXPO Avenue (世博大道1200号, 浦东)
1 RMB Challenge (EXPAT BANDS) @ YYT
看老外演出，给你钱！Continuing on its second day, get yourself another 1RMB and a face full of local expat rock on Sunday! This time the 1RMB Challenge concert features expat bands playing music for locals (and anybody else who shows up.) Lineup: Pairs, ROM, The Horde, Moon Tyrant, and Pacific.
– 1RMB // 2:30pm to 6pm // 851 Kaixuan Lu, by Yan’an Xi Lu ( 凯旋路851号, 近延安西路口)
Lake of Tears @ MAO
In what has just about become a weekly tradition at MAO Livehouse, this Sunday they’ll be hosting yet another European metal band, this time in the form of Swedish group Lake of Tears. They play gothic/folk metal (I’m translating from Chinese here, no idea if that’s a genre in English). Explore the pathos of the earth. Explore your doom. And do it at 8pm on a Sunday evening. If you buy presale, you get a free Lake of Tears poster! We suggest just hitting up MAO for presale tickets, as their Taobao tickets link looks wack.
220RMB, 159RMB presale // 8pm // MAO Livehouse // 3/F, 308 Chongqing Nan Lu, near Jianguo Zhong Lu (3/F, 重庆南路308号 近建国中号)
