Dongguan, Chang’an Town, a notorious nightclub was the scene of a clash between Shenzhen special police and gangsters with knives. During the altercation, officers opened fire, accidentally striking a nearby cab driver in the process. Though the driver was taken to the hospital, he was pronounced dead the next morning.
According to the nightclub staff, on January 9th, around Shenzhen special police in plain clothes conducted a raid on the night club as an impromptu inspection. Nightclub security, though, were not aware of the officers identities, and immediately took cover after the officers burst in the door. When the officers did not identify themselves nor produce their badges after several requests by nightclub security, they found themselves under attack by the machete-wielding staff.
At this point, the officers started shooting to ward off the attackers – firing three times. One of these shots was the unfortunate bullet that struck the cab driver, Luo, in the stomach.
Luo was taken to the hospital, but despite the best efforts of the hospital, Luo’s internal bleeding was too severe and he passed away on the morning of January 10th.
The nightclub is currently shut pending further investigation. Friends and family of Luo, who has a 4-year-old daughter, feel the police acted impulsively and without care when discharging their weapons.
One nightclub staff member shook his head as he told reporters, “This shouldn’t have happened… The police officers ordered nightclub security to put down their weapons, but used their own guns as threats — it’s no wonder security thought they were suspicious. Furthermore, the officer’s method of inspection was not in accordance with common procedure.”
