We recently chanced upon a “secret showroom” in Shanghai. It’s massively exciting to go to a secret location (in this case, an apartment in Chang Ping Road) and you get to meet the designer and review his entire Spring/Summer collection!
We met with the chief designer behind the label, AmareSinh, Huy Tran, who studied at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City and have him talked to us about him, his sister and their fashion empire!
What makes AmareSinh special is that it is a family business. Huy, who is the creative mind behind the label, and his sister Huyen, in charge of business operations, are the founders, but also get support from everyone in the family. Growing up in a family of five women, Huy has always styled them and every time he did, he picked and chose clothes that are sexy, but not too revealing, that make them look and feel strong and confident. This talent might have been what inspired him to pursue fashion.
Shanghaiist: Can you tell us more about your brand name AmareSinh?
H: “Amare” means love in Italian and “Sinh” means birth in Vietnamese. Together, this special name commemorates the love, appreciation, and beauty of life through the expression of fashion. “Sinh” is also the founders’ mother’s name and connects the business to the family heritage.
Who’s the brainchild(s) behind AmareSinh?
H: In 2009, Huy left his fashion design job in New York City to travel internationally, learn about fashion in other countries, and to start his own fashion label. Huy found the muse for his fashion line and proposed the idea to his sister Huyen. She had just graduated with a Masters degree from Duke University and felt it was a great opportunity to put her knowledge to practical use. With the help and encouragement of family and friends, the two launched AmareSinh in 2010.
What inspired you guys to start this brand?
H: I was working at a women’s wear company in New York City and after a while, I felt that there was no room to grow creatively. With two of my other friends, we decided to travel, and ended up in Shanghai. That’s where I got my inspiration to start a fashion label. My sister (who had just graduated with a concentration in business) and I caught up and talked about entrepreneurship. Leaving fashion was not an option for me and she loved business, so we conceived the idea of starting AmareSinh.
What is your new Spring/Summer 2012 collection all about?
H: Unlike last season’s Fall/Winter 2011 collection which was characteristic of sleek dark sophistication, this Spring/Summer 2012 collection is anything but dark. It is full of bright colors, flirty angles, graceful elegance, and playful touches like detachable
Where is your “secret showroom”? How can our readers get in touch with you?
H: The Shanghai showroom is located at 667 Changping Road, Room 302, Shanghai 200040 and visitors have to make an appointment via [email protected]
In the showroom AmareSinh presents the collections to fashion buyers from boutiques, department stores, and e-commerce sites but also offers individual orders and personal tailoring. Huy also does personal tailoring for men, which is the secret few people know about.
Do you mind sharing with us a rough price range of your pieces?
H: Most pieces are around 1000RMB-2000RMB, but some of the dresses which are more elaborate can go beyond 6400RMB
What is an AmareSinh clientele like? Do they have a distinct style?
H: The AmareSinh woman is sexy, sophisticated, daring, determined, and chic. AmareSinh targets ages between 18 and 35 years with a focus on young professionals who know how to work hard and enjoy life. Some of the pieces are somewhat bold, so its for the woman who is confident and is effortlessly cool.
How would you like to see your brand grow? What’s the goal for AmareSinh in the near future?
H: AmareSinh aims to be a global brand that provides sexy, edgy, yet sophisticated clothing that enhances the architecture of a woman’s body.
Besides individual orders that can be ordered from anywhere and personal tailoring in the showroom in Shanghai, AmareSinh is also being sold in boutiques in the US. In the near future we would like to see our clothing in stores in Shanghai, because we feel the line really suits the Shanghai market. We are currently in talks with a number of boutiques in Shanghai and might consider opening our own store.
Sounds interesting and cool? If so, drop Huy or Huyen an email to make an appointment and be amazed by their passion for fashion and their full range of beautiful clothes!
