At 7am on Friday morning the doors of Shanghai’s Apple Stores will open allowing all Chinese citizens who properly queued overnight an equal and fair chance at receiving their new, unlocked iPhone 4S. Hah, fat chance! In an impressive feat of organization, scalpers have bussed in over 200 people (all wearing matching red hats) from out of town to wait in line overnight and buy iPhones at Shanghai’s Huaihai Road Apple Store!
In their attempts to prevent scalping for the release of the iPhone 4S, Apple set a limit of two phones per person. Not so easily deterred, scalpers simply took the limit as a logistical challenge, and responded by sending out job notices to residents of the city of Qidong in nearby Jiangsu Province.
Check out the advertisement below for a similar operation at Beijing’s Sanlitun Apple Store, which offers free breakfast and 100RMB to anyone who’s willing to wait in line!
Aside from the red hat crew, similarly huge crowds have gathered outside all of China’s five Apple Stores (pictures below). Though China Unicom started selling the iPhone 4S on their website at midnight, those phones are tied to a 2-3 year contract and thus are less desirable both by scalpers and normal citizens who wish to stick to their own carrier.
