Watch: Bitchfight between mainland tourists eating on the Hong Kong MTR with local passengers

A video of a quarrel between mainland tourists caught snacking on a Hong Kong subway train with local passengers has burnt up the internets in both Hong Kong and the mainland. Since the video was uploaded to Youtube five days ago, it has racked up half a million views, and a few hundred thousand more on various Chinese video sites. Here's a quick summary of what happens in the video:

At the start of the video, a Hong Kong man demands an apology from the girl and her mother but the tourists refuse, saying it is not a big deal. Others then join in on both sides.

One of the Hongkongers presses the emergency button and notifies platform staff. An MTR employee tells the tourists they can't eat inside the train and a mainland woman says sorry in English. A Hong Kong man then says sarcastically: "Oh, she knows English".

A mainland woman tries to explain the situation to the MTR staff member but is interrupted by the Hongkongers as the quarrel resumes. At the end of the video, a Hong Kong man says: "No need to speak to them. That's what mainlanders are like."

Huang Xiangyang, senior writer at the China Daily, describes the video as a "symbol of the 'culture clash' between Hong Kong and the mainland":
Internet users from the mainland overwhelmingly pointed to Hong Kong residents' sense of superiority - something that was routinely felt by the less wealthy mainlanders when they visited Hong Kong before its return to the motherland in 1997 - only a very few took a neutral stand, noting that mainland tourists should learn to behave themselves while Hong Kong people should be more tolerant and not overact.

I would no doubt have reacted in the same way as most of my mainland compatriots if I had not lived in Hong Kong for five years. In fact, I was expecting to experience discrimination when I was first sent to the city in 2000 to work for the local bureau of our newspaper.

After all, I had experienced not so subtle discrimination in big cities such as Shanghai where I could not speak the local dialects. Given Hong Kong's history as a British colony for more than 150 years, what more could I expect?

Yet my fears never materialized. Instead, my five years living and working in Hong Kong are some of my most pleasant memories. Instead of enmity and discrimination, I was shown hospitality and care by the local people, who were always polite and ready to help.

UPDATE: Peking University professor Kong Qingdong responds to the video, calling Hong Kongers bastards, dogs and thieves.

i say that was a bitch move, hitting the emergency button just because kids were eating? He is a man and shouldn't be fighting with a woman anyways.
  • That mainland woman probably thought she was being considerate by not dumping her trash on the ground, like people do on the train all the time in China. I feel so bad for Hong Kong. It's such a nice place, and the people are so friendly and considerate; but their rowdy, hick neighbors are always dumping on them.

Both the butthurt Hong Kong dogooder and selfentitled Mainland witch need to be slapped silly. One ounce of decency is all it takes to comprehend "when in Rome..." and as plain as day, the female creature didn't have any of that. As for the chap, he should quit being the biggest baby under the sun - grow some thick skin for a change. Why he reacted the way he did to getting thrown the books at his crap Mandarin is beyond me. As if Hongkongers don't take the piss about Mainlanders' appalling Cantonese!

Some tourist eating on the MTR train isnt such a big issue as to almost starting a fight.

When someone try to be civil, taking the law as an good excuse , alleged others who might look like a weakling to them,

At no circumstance should member of public takes the law into their hands, if they have a cause for justice, they should let the respective authority handle and dealt with it.

Would you think the "big guy" dares to tell off the tourists if they are not ladies and kids . I bet he dares!

In other words, the civil minded guy is actually a bully under the pretext of finding an excuse and got bitten by the verbal exchange between the tourists.
Finding it hard to swallow his pride, he tends becomes more aggressive.

Is this what a civil manner guy should be behaving,
Why couldnt he clean up the train if he is so concerned and civil minded.
He may have set a better example ?

Can MTR considered allowing eating and drinking on the train instead.
May be this way, civil minded locals and tourists alike might avoid clashing over non-trival issues.

    Looking from a tourist perspective,
It would be beneficial to have a little snack while traveling on the train.

but of course from the train operator perspective,
cost saving may be the issue in maintaining the train .

Is there any alternative to summon anyone who litters on the train.
if yes, as long as passengers could eat and pay the fines if they litters may be a
    viable solution.

  • bpeezee12
In a perfect world that would be true but in the end to fine a tourist is retarded.  How are you going to collect on visitor and any moments notice cross the border. I owe MTR 500 HKD on my octopus card that I used my passport to get.  If I go back tommorow I can still buy food and ride the MTR and leave the following day.  Just like everywhere else in the world you have to be respectful of your surrounding and that includes the train that other people ride in.  Next time you get on a train bring a hazmat suit. Mainland tourist are the worst and the most disgusting and they need social training back in their own town before they travel anywhere outside their borders.

This absolutely is a sign of the culture clash between two cultures, and one more: Hong Kongers love their city and won't take guff.  If this happened in Shanghai or Beijing, a ring of people would surround the combatants and be guilty of the silence and apathy that surrounds them.

  • i have been annoyed by eating in metro trains in the mainland ocassionally. once i saw a cleaning staff, taking the metro after finishing her shift, throwing wrappers of her food on the floor of the train, for someone else (a colleague?) to clean up. another time a woman standing immediately close to me in a 45 minute ride at rush hour spent the entire time eating grapes, one at a time, in front of me. it annoyed me because it made my throat salivate at a time when i did not want to experience that. why didn't she eat at home, i asked myself. another time i saw a family open up the KFC bag to feed their kid, while riding, dipping their food into sauces. if there are rules such as not eating in public transportation, they are there to make the experience of traveling more pleasant for everyone, such as keeping the travel compartment clean for the many people who use it. that said, if someone needs to eat a quick snack because they are going to experience a sugar low, then doing so discreetly should be okay. there should be a middle ground, such as being able to have a quick snack without disturbing fellow passengers.

I am shanghainese, though I lived in HK for 8 years of my childhood. This is a prime example of Bao Fa Hu, or Nouveau Riche. These particular mainlanders feel entitled to doing whatever they want now that they've made some money. I'm not saying all mainlanders are like this, but these are representative of a cultural phenomenon clearly taking hold in China.

没教养,没文化,its people like this who make me embarrassed to be a mainlander in HK, even though HK is a second home to me.
  • BBC_Redux
Alex, my parents came from Shanghai and returned to Hong Kong after several years at stateside. Pre-1997, Hong Kong poeple would show the nastiest prejudice against Ah Chang, which a derogatory word for someone from China. One of the reasons was that Ah Chang was very poor. Now that some mainlanders are rich, Hong Kongers are getting the red eye disease. But are all mainlanders rich? Why insult and tag every one from the mainland because of the actions of a few nouveau rich???

Funny is when my parents came from Shanghai in 1949, they had deep seated prejudice towards the local Hong Kongers, calling them uncouthed and crude and some Shanghainese opened their famous hair salons and tailors to civilize them (the Hong Kongers). Daughters were forbidden to marry local Canyonese men etc. How times have changed.
  • My grandparents were the old style Chinese who worked very hard to get where they were, and while they live on the mainland, I always hear them talking about the new Chinese generation who believe in making money fast, and screw everyone else. I lived in HK for about a decade and I find it sad that this is something recent that is happening. It's not that Hong Kong is feeling inferior to mainland China (as the China Daily article was saying), but rather Hong Kong represents a kind of Chinese person that follows the rules, has standards and doesn't believe they are entitled to anything.
  • BBC_Redux
michael, if you talk to old timers in HK, they will tell you Hong Kong people were some of the rudest in the world and money was everything, just look at ostentious display of wealth. It seems many Hong Kongers have short memories.

  • hongkon1
I know, which has nothing to do with the mainlanders. Is just D&G!!!!
  • BBC_Redux
Actually he could have asked the mainlander to stop and explain that regulations forbid eating in a nice way, at least that is what I would have done. Instead he became very agressive and used the word "mainlanders", which is totally uncalled for.
  • Al
Your presumption that the Hong Kong man was rude at the outset of his exchange with the mainlanders betrays its own prejudices. The video doesn't show how the altercation began and it is entirely possible that it started just as amicably as you would have hoped to have handled it yourself. Perhaps it was the mainlanders who became aggressive first because they didn't like being told what to do. Either way, you don't know and you should not presume to do so.
  • BBC_Redux
Al, I live d in many countries, and are entirely aware of cultural sensitivities. If I see an American eating in the Hong Kong MTR, would I yell at hem "you Americans"? Comprende.

Your report is an absolute misstatement . According to Hong Kong newspapers and the firsthand account of the Hongkong guy in the video on Facebook, the mother in the video poured some snacks into the little girl's hands, and some noodles fell on the floor. The man thus pointed to the No Eating sign and said in Mandarin: "Excuse me, no eating is allowed on the train"; only to be shouted at instantly by the mother who mentioned "its just a bite of a kid and they were stopping. It's none of your business." After pointing out the mother did eat as well, the man heard another mainland tourist joking at his poor mandarin. And that's how the fight started.

Few days later that guy did clarify on facebook that he by no means discriminates mainland tourists. And it is false report of your kind keep fuelling up the dilemma as if the gulf is not big enough.
  • hongkon1
bullshit!  Based on the video, he sounds discriminating....if he's not, then why the fuck did he say all mainlanders are like that?  I don't know what he did before that, maybe get yelled at by his parents or his boss, but he sounds like he was trying to release his personal angers by a small matter like this.  He was not not making this a big deal, but making other passengers inconvenience.  He said he has time to wait, but not everyone in the train like him.  He's inconsiderate and selfish as well.  He's a moron!!!!  I am not siding the mainlanders as well, but I don't think he's a hero either!.  He's just a jerk trying to make this a big ordeal.  Moran!
  • bpeezee12
you don't know Hong Kong.  SO you are not qualified to take sides.
The guy is a hero because he acknowleged what allot of people in and from hong kong wanted to say.  If you noticed the mainlanders had all of their travel essentials.  Big luggage, food, kids, taking up what precious space the MTR has (which is allot considering how huge the compartment are). 1 they take up space, 2 they break rules, 3 they have a since of entitlement since they are obviously visiting they can do what ever they want.

They same the same about "laowai" when we come to mainland and roam freely and wild in their land too they just too timid to say it to our face because they assume we can't speak Chinese, but I the dumbest crap coming out of their mouths pertaining "laowai".  Go some where else and this can be evident.  Nothing new here folks.  In this instance its Civilized China versus newly rich unrefined China.  Hong Kongers know eventually they will be over run by these people can they atleast come over with some class when entrenching themselves in this small ecosystem?  This is probably the biggest issue with the all the Chinese, from hong kong to taiwan to singapore to down town San Francisco, more saying saying you are welcome but can you check your ugly idiosyncrasies back where you came from?
  • hongkon1
Look at what you just said!  You have no idea what you are talking about!!

You said he's a hero or are you a coward for not having the ability to bring the issue up?  chicken out?  If he's a hero, he will try to fix problems not making a big sense and causing everyone inconvenience.  Your so call hero which was an idiot who pushed the red button for some non emergency event!

The question is why MTR allow them?  that's MTR's problem for letting them bringing excessive stuff.  and please, like you are saying Hong Kongers are perfect that they don't break any of these?  that's bullshit!  That's just your excuse saying your hero was doing a right thing, well he wasn't!

You said this" They same the same about "laowai" when we come
to mainland and roam freely and wild in their land too they just too
timid to say it to our face because they assume we can't speak Chinese,
but I the dumbest crap coming out of their mouths pertaining "laowai".
"  You said they are too timid to say it to your face, were you doing the same thing when you see mainlanders????  is that why you said your hero was saying something that everyone wants to say but too timid to say?????  Look back at what you said!!!

You also said"  Hong Kongers know eventually they will be over run by these people can
they atleast come over with some class when entrenching themselves in
this small ecosystem?"  So the best way to fight back? is this?? how civil are you guys then?  if you think this is the right approach!

So before you call me whatever the fuck you were trying to say, why don't you check back on what the heck are you trying to say!  fucking idiot!!  By the way, you so deserve to live in HK!!!!!  Good for you!! So happy for you!! hahahaha
  • hahakinkin
excuse me !!! i have a friend who came from Beijing who are schoolmate with me in Toronto.he is a rich guy , when we discussed about the topic on " my father is Li Gang!" he said that what the guy was doing is right , it's because the people you have crushed on , if you didn't make him to die . you should have a very big trouble, you have to support them for the rest of their live.so what do you think the  difference between Hong Kong SAR and the mother country China !!buddy
  • hongkon1
Well, buddy.  I am not sure what you are trying to say or your main point, but it sounds like you support the chinese government in 6.4 event then?  That you agreed killing people with tanks is the best way to suppress people?  cause you sound like it!
  • bpeezee12
He's a hero for standing up for his culture.  He doesn't  have to fix anything.  If someone were to come up to you and tap you on the shoulder "hey you can't eat on the train its against the rules" take it with caution and courtesy. No the mainlanders had an attitude.  He called it like saw it and in the video there was no reasoning with the mainlanders.

The MTR in hong kong is not like mainland. They don't have xray machines and fake police at every entrance to meter who or what goes in their vacilities or cars like Beijing or Shanghai has does ever since the Olympic.  Hong Kong is not a police state. They leave it up to considerate, educated people to govern them selves and be kind to others.  Not saying hong kongers are perfect but my three years in kowloon (the roughest part of hong kong) have been the most pleasant experience of commuting compared to mainland anywhere.  You can spot a mainlander a mile away with out even listening to them.

The "laowai"  issue.  I've been at this for 10 years and my ex wife ( mainlander) was the worst offender.  Just because Im not chinese , mainlanders shouldn't  have the audacity to strike up stupid jokes about other "laowai". Since im black the comments are far worse and sinister I wish I never understood chinese.  And the fucking staring OMG. In hong Kong since its a small place and a real good international trading zone, its perceived to be more racially diverse than the 56 nationals of mainland.  No one gives a fuck what you are in hong kong they just want to get from point to point like every other joe blow who commutes like them.

They (mainlanders)  are too timid because they are afraid of losing face.  So they just stare until you pass by and then here comes the curse words flying in a crowded bus or train. Or the intrepid "haloo" wtf thats not even english try again faggot.  That shit gets old when its happens all the time.

The best way to protect anything that encroaches on you is to make the offenders aware.  1 thing Mainlanders have embraced recently is self awareness leading back to the issue of "FACE". This seems to be the most effective way for mainlanders to progress out of their everyday habits in other environments.  Unfortunately in Mainland you can almost have sex on the train except for the fact that its fucking filthy and crowded with all the bags, and all the dirty workers, and all the stinky beggars, and then rest of China commuting.  Hong Kongers and their life styles is a much more streamlined safer and cleaner environment and I guess Mainlanders and their way of doing things threaten that.

They are the same people but have different qualities of life in which 1 should learn to adapt and embrace for it will benefit them in the long run.You are the perfect example of what is wrong with mainlanders (the way you write gives me impression you are from mainland) .  Im back where came from. 10 years of mainland of really fucked my faith mankind.
  • chuequanli
I actually think the metro in Shanghai is quite clean. But really? hitting the emergency button because some women and kids were eating? And having a scream-fest with them? What kind of man is he?
  • hongkon1
You still don't get it, and don't get the point I was saying!  Once again, I am declaring that I am not siding anyone in the video.  He is not a hero! There are many ways to stand up for his culture in a more manner way.  We are only looking at one side, but his way of pushing the red button is not a smart move.  He should get fines for misusing the emergency button!  That makes him an idiot, not a hero.  Thanks to him, many people got delayed!  Of course he doesn't to fix anything, because he was making a big mess!  and he needs people to pick up his shit for him! Smart move? NOT!

Let me ask you if someone say this to you "hey you can't eat on the train its against the rules" take it with
caution and courtes" I think you will give him dirty look too or find offended because is really none of their business.    Honestly, there are many Hong Kongers are like that. Famous examples are like Bus Uncle and the kid who took two seats in the bus!  They are all Hong Kongers...don't tell me you mis-identify them as Mainlanders!! There are probably more, go to youtube and educate yourself!

"The MTR in hong kong is not like mainland. They
don't have xray machines and fake police at every entrance to meter who
or what goes in their vacilities or cars like Beijing or Shanghai has
    does ever since the Olympic".

For your info, their security measures were check for bombs...not food detectors!  and yeah yeah, I am not going to digress the topic how there's no meanings of them etc.

" Hong Kong is not a police state. They
leave it up to considerate, educated people to govern them selves and be
kind to others.  Not saying hong kongers are perfect but my three years
in kowloon (the roughest part of hong kong) have been the most pleasant
experience of commuting compared to mainland anywhere.  You can spot a
mainlander a mile away with out even listening to them. "

To be honest, where in mainland have you been into? don't tell me just Shenzhen and beijing or shanghai!  Once again, you think your stupid hero was being considerate?  He doesn't sound educated listening to the stuff he mentioned.  be kind?  yeah, he was play pretend as the police.  of course, the women in the video were also not considerate and keep to themselves...but even after she said sorry (yeah sorry is not enough, but at least it could have come to a close to the scene), the moron was keep making the situation worse. The MTR guy claimed them down, your hero just keep pissing them off.  causing others to join the fight. You call this heroic?  He's worse than the radicals who was campaigning for the election? oh hello, the radicals who were running were not mainlander, but I can spot them saying and doing something more stupid than those ladies in the MTR.  At least the ladies in the viedo didn't hit people!

I am not going to debate about the laowai, because that is just so out of the topic and what you said are just your opinion.  I respect that, but I disagree because this is just one side of the story.  I know lots of mainlanders friends who come to HK for their phd and master degrees, they are very polite and not like the typical ones you see in the street!  Regardless, I am not going to discuss because my views are far different than yours and there's no point to convince you what I see from both views.  However, i think your ex wife had a factor that caused you to skew the way you see things just like what this video is doing.

Believe me many HK hate losing face too, in fact, everyone hates that!  Look at Donald Tsang!  and do you think many Hongkongers are speaking British English? God, they think they speak fluently!  well, some of them!  Some hong konger starred at you .  I am 5 ft 9, people in HK stare at you and give you stupid comments just because I am taller than most guys in HK!  Believe me, they are no different than most Mainlanders!   I also hate how they give stupid looks at minorities, such as the Muslims and Philippines or anyone look different to them. I always see Hong Kongers look back and laugh at them after they walk passed by them with curiosity.  They are like frogs inside the well, never see other types of people. (some HKer of course, not all)

And please, have you read news that many young Hong Kongers are having sex or making out in the public?  a few months, there were kids making out in ikea?!?!/ hello?!?!!  Where were you?!?  What kind of qualities are Hong Kongers are doing to themselves?

"You are the perfect example of what is wrong with mainlanders (the
way you write gives me impression you are from mainland) . "

Oh really?  what are you then?  then you must be a perfect example of what is the main problem with Hong Konger!!!  You are the typical closed minded, and emotional based person who try to muse yourself by seeing others embarrassed and suffered.  No, you are so WRONG!  I am not from the mainland.  I am just a typical Hong Konger who still can distinguish what is the main problem with this city.  Either way, good luck!

  • bpeezee12
I laugh at your responses and will not dignify your enquiries. I am living in Hong Kong, standing up for your culture does not mean you have to generalise and insult people from the mainland. What you have just said shows your deep seated prejudice, not just to mainlanders, but foreign workers and South Asians are at the brunt of this prejudice. I once organized a travel trip where I paired an Indian girl with a Hong Kong girl and the Hong Kong girl asked me to change the arrangement because she thinks the dark skinned Bengali girl was dirty.

Actually there was an article on CNNgo which raised the issue about Hong Kong civility, like not holding the door for the person behind you etc. LOL!

Also, Hong Kongers were detested by Vancouverites for driving up the cost of housing, salmon, destroy quaint Canadian houses and replace them with ugly monster houses and displaying their wealth. More galling were the fact that many Hong Kongers returned to HKG after they secured their passports, taking advantage of Canadian goodies but giving nothing in return.

Foreign expats in HKG have some very unflattering things to say about HK people, so don't feel superior, although what the guy said is true, nor shud you assume you are above mainlanders.

  • bpeezee12
again re-affirming what I was talking about.  Every culture has its prejudicial preference whether its positive or not its their right to demand the quality to desire, and create the environment  they choose.

The same thing goes for Canada they should have the right to complain defend that and secure their place in their nation. I wouldn't call it racism when it is a problem that goes unchecked.  Influxes can cause allot of social disruptions amongst the locals.
  • hahakinkin
so you don't think Canadian didn't racist on Chinese ??  or you really hate Chinese.so there is the fat chance to you to make split up between hongkonger and Chinese, sorry !Chinese in Canada we do pay the tax in Canada ??? and Canada is a diversity country if you said something like this you are racist as well i might have a chance to gat you in jail !!! • BBC_Redux
That is exactly my point, thou shall not do to others what you do want others do to you. I personally know many Canadian Chinese, including some of subordinates, who declare non-residency so they do not pay Canadian taxes while working in Hong Kong. Am I not right??? Actually I don't feel superior, but many of you folks do. BTW, can you even read, where did I say I hate Chinese??? Can't you see I am sanding up to prejudice against Chinese people?  I hate the arrongant self entitled superiority of some of you Hong Kongers to Mainlanders.

In NYC rotten subway, it is always snack time for adult passengers drinking beers and having popcorns.
  • hongkon1
I am not siding anyone, and my previous statement is only addressing to the guy who thinks he is logic.  MTR has its own rule, so the only logic is to respect it.  But in reality MTR is not elementary school, if people don't follow it doesn't mean we have to report them to the teacher.  And if people do eat in the train, let's hope they at least keep the place clean.

I seen Hong Konger cleaning fish in the MTR and leaving blood stains in the train, and other crazy thing such as spitting water in the seat.  So compared these stuff I saw before, eating is not so bad at all.  Of course, I am not saying we should eat in the MTR but hoping people more respect and considerate for others.
  • misskarenwpy
I won't say the guy is a hero either. Any offensive word can never be justified. What vexed me is this one-sided story here is just half of the picture, which doesn't sound quite fair. Just calm down.
  • Thanks for your additional information, but this is not a "false report". There is nothing to retract in this post, which is a factual description (via SCMP) of what is seen in the video for the benefit of readers who do not understand Chinese and Cantonese. What the man says on his Facebook about what happened prior to the start of the video is his side of the story. We'll believe it when we see the video.
  • hongkon1
Thanks for your info.  I am not siding with anyone here, but I must say many Hong Koners discriminate Mainlanders.  This is becoming a very serious issue.  It is very unfortunate, but I guess this is what happened when fears force people to be aggressive to others.  This is what HongKongers are feeling since they are losing their abilities to control the economy as they used to be.  They try to blame others for their impotent and mainlanders become the scrapgoat.  This is the same what they did to the Philippines.
  • Mafan1
I am white. I was once reminded by an older Hong Konger that drinking was not allowed on the MTR. He was polite about the issue motioning to the sign indicating that eating and drinking are not allowed. I smiled and put my drink away. It's just that simple. I think this case has less to do with racism and much more to do with HK'ers tired of visitors not respecting the established norms.

Making fun of the way cantonese people speak mandarin certainly could not have helped the situation....
  • Right. They are polite to you because you are WHITE. I transit in Hongkong in 2009. It is very funny that When we speak mandarin, we saw a racism face; but when we speak English, they are very nice.

R.I.P. 23/08/2010 There is no discrimination to Philippines. The president of Philippine still made joke of this tragedy and has not apologetic yet . if you says hong kong people is the race who do like racist others is not fair.when you want to talk about those conspiracy theory remember to understand more the political background first.since 1997 Hong Kong Became a part of china and most of the hong kong citizen they do admit they are Chinese and proud of the achievement of the economic reform .At the same time , we lost our freedom of speech and right of autonomy. For example:In 2002, the government's proposed anti-subversion bill pursuant to Article 23 of the Basic Law, which required the enactment of laws prohibiting acts of treason and subversion against the Chinese government,A wide range of treason, like the action of the man above,in CCPs in China most of the communist might think he is a traitor to china.http://www.scmp.com/portal/site/SCMP/...
Pregnant mainlanders take up all the beds in local maternity wards of government hospital , most of them are without permission to give birth in hong kong , Begging at the ER , that's the ways they always do ,after , they won't pay any fees and their child and whole family will use Hong Kong government resource like free education , Comprehensive Social Security Assistance etc. without pay the tax. Thus that the reason why hong kong is full of anger right now.At the end i want to saiy hong kong people most of them are nice and civilized.

The Philippine thing happened in 2010 was tragic, but I was not addressing that.  I was upset about that as well, but then again when we talk about philipine everyone will remember about that which will forever scared in us.  I was talking about before that, people do discriminated against minority like philipine.  The reason I said that is because I have friends who are Philippine who come into this city as vet and  other jobs other than becoming a domestic worker.  They were treated very badly and dis-respectable.  Of course, no all Hong Kongers are like that but most treated them badly and look down on them as if they are domestic workers.  So put that Philippine event aside, some I am saying SOME Hong Kongers are being very discriminate to them.  Now with the Philippine accident occurred, people have more reasons to discriminate.

One more thing, do you seriously believe everything that the media say? The newspaper always show people what they want to hear, and not other things.  Or worse, exaggerate things a little.  Yeah, I know the problem with the hospital situations, but that is not just the mainlanders ' false.  The government should also be responsible for allowing loopholes to happen.  Nevertheless, I am not siding with anyone.  I am just saying what I see and sharing it.  Take it or leave it, but the tensions going on around now are making many Hong Kongers felt helpless and trying to blame others for their problems. I mean look what Donald Tsang was doing.  Which something that anyone would do, regardless of race when you feel crisis in life.

For some reason my reply posted just now is gone. I was saying the SCMP report is obviously different from other media in Hong Kong. For instance The Standard, another English daily here, which said "The clip showed a Hong Kong man telling a mainland woman that her daughter could not eat in the compartment. The woman replied her daughter was only a child. But her friend cut in, ridiculing the Hongkonger's poor Putonghua. A quarrel ensued."  And I translated two other news clips from Hong Kong Daily News and Mingpao just now, both mentioning the Hong Kong guy trying to stop the kids from eating politely only to be scolded with "Mind your own business", and then the mainland ladies instantly "played dumb" once another HK guy pressed the emergency button and called for MTR staff.

I worked closely with a magazine in Beijing, and I have loads of mainland Chinese friends. When the misunderstanding and misconceptions between the two regions are already so uncivilisedly fierce, another subjective or biased report can hurt very badly.

Maybe you could just do more research next time before publishing one side of the story as well.
