An aquarium in Nanjing has sent out an appeal for people with long arms to help them pull a volleyball from the stomach of a dolphin, whose life is currently at risk. Since five year old Jiang Bo swallowed his toy on Wednesday, surgical efforts to remove the ball have been unsuccessful, leading the aquarium to try a more direct approach. “Whosoever pulleth out this ball…”
A similar incident occurred in December 2006 when two dolphins in Fushun swallowed dangerous plastic shards. After attempts to remove them using surgical instruments failed, they did what any town in the Middle Ages would have done and contacted the nearest giant. Mongolian Bao Xishun then used his 3ft arms to save the dolphins in a complicated medical procedure that involved shoving his arm down the dolphins throat, fumbling around, and yanking out anything that felt like plastic.
Nobody has yet saved the day for Jiang Bo, despite offers and attempts to help from basketball player Meng Da and other assorted tall people. Latest reports on Weibo suggest that the dolphin is currently undergoing surgery in another attempt to remove the ball by less comical means.
We hope all goes well and Jiang Bo will be playing volleyball again sometime soon.
