Yao Ming might be accruing guanxi up the wazoo with his new standing committee gig, but it’s Shaquille O’Neal who truly speaks to the people! Shaq showed up for Hunan TV’s Spring Gala Festival to run around on stage with kiddie monks, and went through his usual patented brand of kung foolery while trying not to step on the children.
We wondered out loud how Hunan TV was going to top their geriatric cover of Lady Gaga’s Bad Romance that was staged for the Mid-Autumn Festival Gala, a clip which that brought the internet to its knees late last year.
And we have to say, Hunan TV, that you’re one of the leading lights of this whole soft power push that the government has been stressing these days.
It really is pretty admirable how far Shaq has gone with the kung fu gimmick. What began as sideline kung fu slapstick goofiness after he was drafted in ’92 eventually spawned the godawful Shaq Fu videogame, and a visit to Henan province’s Shaolin Temple in 2009.
The Quotatious Big Aristotle even declared that he would try to bring Kung Fu to the NBA, and that his preferred technique was the snake-style.
We definitely think this has got Warren Buffet Spring Festival appearance beat by at least a country mile. And if Shaq is possible, then that can only mean one thing: bring on The Wu-Tang Clan!
