38-year-old self-proclaimed virgin creates website to stop youngsters from having sex

Out and proud 38-year-old virgin has published online a "certificate of virginity" which she apparently got from a hospital.
A 38-year-old single woman has created a firestorm of controversy on the internet after setting up a "virginity website" to get young people to abstain from sex before marriage. Saladin Xu of Shanghai Daily writes:
The woman, Tu Shiyou, a Hubei Province freelancer who calls herself "Virgin Goddess" online, spent 1,000 yuan (US$158) to set up her "virginity website" because she believed that "some young people's sexual attitudes are distorted."

On the website, Tu published articles, some written by her to "share her experience of successfully keeping virginity for such a long time."

Some articles are published to teach readers the difference between virgins and non-virgins, some to advocate virginity and combat premarital sex, she said.

As some of her readers doubted whether she is a virgin herself, Tu even uploaded photos of medical reports on the website that she said prove her virginity. She also said she has a master's degree from Wuhan University, one of China's lead universities based in the provincial capital of Wuhan.

"I have set up the website because I am quite successful in keeping my virginity for the past 38 years," Tu told Shanghai Daily. "But many young people have failed to do so. I saw them on the TV news or websites that some are living tragic lives because they don't treasure their virginity."

She said she wanted to show young people that, as a "decent-looking" woman, it has not been hard for her to keep virginity and that she is living a "joyful and shiny" life without sex.

The website, which had only about 30 visitors per day after it was set up last November, was instantly swarmed by so many netizens after the address was published on the popular microblog Weibo.com that its server broke down.

A heated online discussion followed over the website and the topic of virginity. A poll started on Weibo.com with 3,700-plus participants shows 57 percent support the woman and her website for her opinion against premarital sex.

In response to comparisons made by netizens between her and online celebrity Sister Feng, Tu said, "I really can't understand this.I'm encouraging young people not to engage in sexual behaviour before marriage. This should be a positive thing."

"Besides, I'm not out to be famous. I just want to live my life," she added.

And to her detractors who say she's a "born-again virgin" with the help of artificial hymens, Tu says, "I've thought of all that, and that's why I came to one of the more reputable hospitals. If there are still more doubters out there, I will find an even more authoritative institution. I just wanted to be able to prove I have abstained from sex all my life and promote these values in society. There's really no need to fake such a thing."

In 2010, controversy broke out when right-wing US Christian group Focus on the Family was reported to have brought its "pro-family", "abstinence education" programme to Yunnan province.

  • I believe she is asexual

  • This is pathetic. i feel sry for her. Just because ur a virgin doesnt mean u would be highly respected. And this means nothing to the world. The value of a woman is not about a hymen, its about what u do to change the world.
Also, how do u know if u and ur future husband would be sexually compatible if u never had sex b4 getting married? Just dont be a whore. The young generation need to figure this out by themselves, stop telling them what to do. Time to get a life!

  • Some would argue that if two people truly love each other then sex isn't even necessary. Some would argue that love is really only the sexual feelings.

If one is able to abstain from unnecessary sexual urges, then how does that make them a lesser person? (that works the other way around too). She might just not have met someone she really likes, and wants to teach that to kids so they don't think they HAVE to have a relationship or HAVE to have sex right away, which so many think they do, which isn't healthy from a mental health perspective since such arbitrary rules don't actually exist and have no bearing on a morality scale.

Not all kids can figure out everything by themselves. The west is already figuring that out slowly, as our younger generations act with large amounts of disrespect in their native urban jungles.

  • Good effort , you has a great self respect and dignity .Tu Shiyou the more you talks to the peoples that disagree with you the more you make them shamed and the more stupid reason you see from this people never regrete what they did . What they was is too teach other people do that ashamed with them .  Good people like you Tu Shiyou will make this peoples very jealous and ashamed .

'poll started on Weibo.com with 3,700-plus participants shows 57 percent support the woman and her website for her opinion against premarital sex.'

Among the same respondents, 63% agreed that 'itches are best left unscratched', while 55% concurred with the statement that 'Food should be flavorless'.

My first instinct was to roll my eyes at this woman's perverse denial of her own humanity.

But having thought about it from her perspective, don't really blame her. From what I've heard from female Chinese friends, a 'sex life' for the average Chinese women consists of the occasional 2-minute straight-in straight-out fumble once or twice a month (less after having the kid), from guys who'd much rather be doing it with a pasty-faced 18 year old scrawnbag at the KTV or 'hairdressers'.

Furthermore, she has a master's degree...which means that, because she is ONLY A WOMAN, according to backwarCOUGH COUGH 'traditional' values, she is strictly limited to getting hitched to staggeringly asocial geeks with PhDs who can't find a wife. In sum: she's really not missing out!

Also...China clearly does not have very high standards for women to be declared 'goddesses' or 'beauties'. Just about anyone not covered in pestilent boils qualifies to be ___ beauty/goddess, it seems.

  • You are an idiot

Pretty stupid. This is a totally personal choice and there is no right or wrong answer. Virginity is a social term - not a medical term. It shouldn't be reprimanded nor should it become fetishistic or 'desirable'. 'Virgin Goddess'? Hello, this is obviously a cheap ploy to show off since a virgin is highly regarded in ever patriarchal China. If you are raped, then what? Are you somehow less of a person because you aren't a virgin anymore? I have respect for her and I agree it is a positive thing not to succumb to the warped 'normalities' of society and to not abuse your body, but getting on your high horse and shouting about it...a hymen should not be a commodity. That is just disgusting and just as gross as being promiscuous. You are still reducing yourself to the state of your vagina and that is a very degrading concept. Live your life, stop manipulating young kids.

The only thing more boring than a person bragging about how much sex they've had is a person bragging about how much sex they're not having.

Do it: take your symbols of shame and re-incorporate them as shining symbols representing a wholly different meaning.  You know that wall that's so great and long and begun by the first Emperor of China?  It is a symbol of slavery and despotism (well, unless it was built by aliens) -- well, it was, but now it's a symbol of China's xenophobia against the people that would eventually rule near the end of dynastic rule.

For more examples, look no further than the self-perpetuating Italian-American stereotype that allows people to enjoy the Sopranos and Jersey Shore ironically.  (see: East and West examples!)

They'll be websites dedicated to people devoted to not washing their hands for their entire lives soon.

  • not too good of an idea..what if your new husband isn't so good in the sack? then what? sex is a big part of a happy relationship...what she should be saying is, don't be a whore

No such thing as 中庸 when it comes to certain things in China... once the legs are split, so too are a lack of discretion and moderation.

That said, it will be a great irony if through this fame she meets her first one night stand. Fame is a game changer.
