The speed of mobile Internet in China is the second slowest in the world, only faster than that of India, according a report recently unveiled by the GSM Association (GSMA), an association of mobile operators and related companies.
The study found the average mobile Internet speed in China and India in 2010 at a paltry 50 kpbs and 19 kpbs respectively.
In comparison, Japan and Korea boast of mobile internet speeds in excess of 1400 kpbs.
GSMA expects China’s average mobile Internet speed to reach 1384 kpbs by 2015.
By that time, however, mobile data speeds in South Korea will hit 4984 kpbs and Australia New Zealand will blaze further ahead at 5194 kpbs.
Critics of the report say the statistics are unfair and do not take into account the fact that China did not start to issue 3G licenses until 2009.
Others say, however, that slow but expensive Internet access has greatly hampered China’s mobile Internet development, in particular mobile video stream services.
