Chongqing party secretary Bo Xilai appeared on the Tuesday evening broadcast of Xinwen Lianbo, the widely-watched national news bulletin produced by state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV), attending a Politburo meeting.
Rumors were rife a day ago on the political grapevine that Bo had tendered his resignation to the powerful group of 24 people who oversee the Communist Party of China.
The apparent source of the information was a one-man Hong Kong-based organization known as the Information Center for Human Rights and Democracy.
According to a source cited by the Information Center, Bo was going to be reassigned to work as a director with the National People’s Congress Working Committee.
The rumors were quickly refuted by the Chongqing party committee which said that Bo had been “working as usual”. However, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Hong Lei said he “did not have any information” on the situation when asked about the rumors at a regular press briefing.
