A university professor’s plan to have a Japanese porn actress give a lecture on campus has been cancelled due to “safety concerns”, according to the Wuhan Evening News.
Peng Xiaohui (彭晓辉), a sexology professor in Central China Normal University, had intended to invite former AV actress Hotaru Akanei (红音ほたる) to give a lecture during the course “Introduction of Sexology.”
However, the lecture was eventually cancelled, apparently because of safety concerns.
“Since we cannot stop or refuse anyone into our classroom, even if we have tried everything we can to maintain safety, it is still very difficult to keep the classroom in order and the audience safe,” wrote Professor Peng in an announcement.
The invitation, originally shrouded in secrecy, was leaked online and went viral, attracting widespread public attention and raising huge controversy. Students from both inside and outside the university, and many non-students indicated they would attend the lecture.
If it had gone ahead as scheduled, the lecture was predicted to have the biggest audience ever in the 109-year history of the university.
Hotaru Akanei once made a name for herself in the porn industry for her combination of her “sweet looks”, “sexy figure” and “outrageous acting”. She became an AIDS prevention campaigner after quitting the industry in November 2008.
Akanei is is reported to have met Professor Peng online half a year ago and was going to pay him a visit this March. Peng then decided to invite her to lecture in class and meet with his students, to give them an opportunity to rub shoulders with an AIDS campaigner.
“Exchange within an academic environment has no forbidden territory,” said Peng. “All categories of human phenomena can be studied, irrespective of profession. In Japan [being an adult video actress] is legal. That was her job.”
Akanei has made several appearances in Mainland China after associating herself with different AIDS prevention groups. She was also reported to have donated 5,000 condoms to Chinese groups at the end of last December.
