The only bands in from overseas are UK rockers Goober Gun and some German goth metal, but you can also catch a Chinese indie album debut and Sunday’s showcase of local up-and-coming metal bands. Cold Fairyland Trio Mini Show @ YYT
Cold Fairyland have been a staple Shanghai band for years, playing progressive rock that mashes Eastern melodies with Western symphonic rock and classical music. The “trio” in tonight’s concert refers to the fact that they’ll only be playing with drums, vocals, and cello.

Mr. Graceless @ YYT
Mr. Graceless is an indie trio from Beijing, stopping by Yuyintang early this Saturday to release their Maybe Mars-backed album “The Tree Evergreen.” The band got their start rehearsing in a humid basement at Beijing’s University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Browsing their Douban quickly confirms their sound is very indie indeed, and very easy on the ears. Give it a listen.

Later in the evening on Saturday at Yuyintang, following the Mr. Gracelss show, is something a bit more up-tempo. Tian (甜蜜的孩子 in Chinese) are a long-time Shanghai rock band, formerly called The Honeys. They’ll be at Yuyintang on Saturday night with a “special guest.”

Student Showcase Vol. 2 (metal edition) @ YYT
In what’s becoming an almost weekly trend, Yuyintang is again hosting a Sunday afternoon concert promoting up-and-comers in the Shanghai music scene. This week brings us a special all-metal edition, with performances by Psyclopus, Return to Sender and Der Wish. Moon Tyrant, who by now are a local metal mainstay, will also be performing.
