We’d like to announce the newest location of Domino’s Pizza has opened in none other than yours truly’s own neighborhood of Aomen Lu! The franchise just opened today (right next to the now defunct Shanhai Livehouse), and we’ve already dusted off our first Quattro Delight, loaded with old-time pizza toppings favorites like pepperoni, smoked chicken, green peppers and, uh, crab. Our taste buds reportedly informed our brain that the pizza was in fact delicious, and tasted much the same as an authentic Domino’s Pizza would, if American Domino’s happened to offer crab as a topping.
Plenty of traditional fare is offered too, including Meat Lover, Pepperoni, and Cheese Lover. Area resident (and our roommate) Chris Powers of Cincinnati, Ohio ordered a large thin-crust Hawaiian pizza, and declared it to be “the bombdiggity.com”, though reported being disappointed by the lack of jalapeno sauce to go with his order of cheesy bread.
It isn’t the first Domino’s in Shanghai, but it’s still significant, since the franchise is evidence of the continued gentrification of the neighborhood around far Eastern Putuo district (If this were Manhattan, it’d be “NoJing” for “North of Jing’an” a la “NoLita” for “North of Little Italy”), which has Channel 1 shopping mall, the M50 Art District (and its adjacent graffiti wall) and the Jade Buddha Temple as main landmarks.
We could go on and on in an exegesis about Domino’s joining nearby trendy Creative Industry Complexes standing in the stead of Former Industrial Areas, and its location on a street that sees tourists arriving in large buses to dine in an exotic ethnic Dai restaurant or visit a silk factory, right next to a migrant-populated recycling center and various hole-in-the-wall eateries whose proprietors hang their clothes at street level in full view of patrons, but you’d probably be more interested in the fact that Domino’s is celebrating their new opening by giving a 30 percent discount for all pizzas on their menu this month.
And plus, Domino’s is also claiming they’ll hand out a coupon for a free pizza if your delivery arrives after 30 minutes from when you ordered it!
All 9 inch pizzas this week are 39RMB (normally 55-63RMB), while 12 inch pizzas are 56RMB (normally 80-90RMB), offer lasts until March 28th. Free delivery is for orders 50RMB or more. Huzzah for expat comfort food!
Call 400-882-5252 for deliveries. For the full menu, click here. Unless, of course, you support a woman’s right to choose, since Domino’s founder Tom Monaghan (and former owner of the Detroit Tigers) is a staunch Pro-Life philanthropist. Decisions, decisions.
