Delegates from all corners of the People’s Republic have gathered in Beijing for the “Two Sessions” (ie., the National People’s Congress and Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference), but aside from some ridiculous things that delegates are bound to say from time to time, there’s really little else for the average unpolitically-minded person to look at. So netizens have trained their eyes instead on some of the expensive gear that delegates have shown up in to see what’s in this season.
Hong Kong cosmetics entrepreneur Cheng Ming Ming would have been a perfect target for PETA in any other functioning democracy. She tweeted a picture of herself outside the Great Hall of the People, decked out in a fur coat and a Louis Vuitton Alma bag said to be worth a mere RMB16,000 (no doubt just small change to her). She also supposedly said that some Hong Kongers think “they’re better than everyone else” because of a “post-colonial mindset”, but we digress.
Real estate tycoon and big boss at Evergrande Xu Jiayin was all smiles with his (very subtle) Hermes belt worth RMB6,000. TV personality Yang Lan showed up with a Marc Jacobs Stam bag from four years ago (the horror) worth RMB10,000. One unknown female delegate apparently showed up with a Hermes Birkin purportedly worth over RMB100,000.
Here’s just one of the many pictures circulating on Sina Weibo right now:
