ooooOOOoooh. Shanghai Shenhua is reportedly keeping the No.11 jersey warm for Didier Drogba, with no player on the Shenhua team having been assigned the number in its newly released roster for the new season.
Shenhua officials claim they’re doing everything they can to sign Chelsea’s Ivorian striker, and that they haven’t given up on negotiations, despite having to compete for Drogba with major clubs like AC Milan.
Shanghai Daily reports:
The club registered all the 30 players for the 2012 Chinese Super League but the “missing” No. 11 fueled speculation that it has not given up on Drogba – not just yet.
Drogba, in his negotiations with Shenhua, had laid claim to the No. 11 shirt. The Ivory Coast striker wears the same jersey number for his current club Chelsea.
“During negotiations, Drogba himself said that he liked the No. 11,” the Oriental Sports Daily quoted an unnamed club official as saying yesterday. “To show the club’s sincerity, we reserved the number for him.”
Nicolas Anelka will wear the No. 39 jersey, the same contrarian number he wore at Chelsea.
Meanwhile, the Shenhua season opener with Jiangsu Sainty is this Saturday, at Hongkou Stadium! OMG so excited. For the full list of this seasons’ Shenhua games from Wild East Football, click here.
