America safer than China? This story may make you think twice.
Just after midnight, bullet shots went through the window of a BMW in an apparent carjack attempt near the University of Southern California (USC) campus. eventually slaying two Chinese graduate students, Ying Wu and Ming Qu.
“The driver had managed to make it from the car, through the rain, to a house where he pounded on the door pleading for help,” police said. Unfortunately, the couple, who are believed to be dating, passed away upon arrival at the hospital. The suspected male gunman is still at large.
Friends, fellow students and neighbourhood residents have been seen laying flowers at the crime scene, mourning their deaths and remembering their lives.
USC has an enormous international student presence with roughly 38,000 students, of which 2,500 are Chinese. Evidently, the economic boom of China has given many opportunities to Chinese students to pursue an education abroad and drive fast cars while they’re at it. The shooting will no doubt send shivers down the back of many a parent whose one and only child has left the safety of their nest back home.
