Jean Tigana will no longer be the head coach of Shanghai Shenhua.
After weeks of speculation, Shanghai Shenhua finally confirmed this morning that head coach Jean Tigana was indeed dimissed from the team.
Ma Yue, the club’s spokesperson, told Reuters, “We have terminated Tigana’s contract because the team’s performance during the matches he was in charge was not good and players also reflected that training methods were inadequate.”
According to People’s Daily, the team hasn’t found a replacement coach yet. But for now, former DR Congo national team head coach Jean-Florent Ikwange Ibenge will serve as interim coach.
Meanwhile, former Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka, who signed on with Shenhua earlier this year, will remain player-coach (and not head coach, as many media outlets have been reporting). Anelka told Reuters that he’s hoping for a Chelsea-like revival of the team.
