Former NBA superstar Allen Iverson was spotted in Shanghai last Thursday, as part of his two-week long promotional basketball tour that’ll see the Answer and the ever-flamboyant Dennis Rodman play games against three Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) teams. So far, Iverson has already played against Stephon Marbury and the Beijing Ducks in a charity game. As for the possibility of playing basketball in China, the Answer’s answer is intriguing, to say the least.
According to earlier media reports, Iverson is interested in playing with a team in China, especially since his NBA career is definitively over, and his 2009-10 stint with the club of Beşiktaş Milangaz in Turkey didn’t turn out too spectacular either.
If he does sign with a Chinese team, he would end up following the footsteps of former rival Stephon Marbury, who has capped his image rehab campaign by leading the Beijing Ducks to the CBA Championship in March. Did Marbury’s ridiculous numbers during the CBA playoffs spark hope for Iverson to make a similar comeback in China?
Said Marbury of Iverson’s intentions on Weibo, “I think [Iverson] will be rejuvenated if he played in China. He would love the fans here if he played basketball here. I hope he can feel the love when he plays here in the coming games.”
For the record, Iverson has always been a fan favorite in China, mostly due to the fact of his particularly slight build and his fearlessness and intense play in the face of taller defenders. His neck tattoo of the Chinese character for ‘loyalty’ (忠) has also been considered pretty rad too.
Expect Metta World Peace to join in on the China bandwagon next, whenever the Lakers decide his underwear on talk shows and elbow-throwing antics aren’t worth the trouble of keeping him.
