After a successful inaugural event last fall, the Design Art Fashion Fair (DAFF) returns to Shanghai for a second showing. Fair organizer The Ice Cream Truck(TICT) plans for nearly double the amount of vendors and participants this time around, in an event that aims to let China’s creative leaders interact, share ideas and inspire the public.
We spoke with TICT organizers to get more background on the biannual fair, which is scheduled to take place this weekend.
1. What exactly is DAFF? Can you explain more what the event is all about?
DAFF is an all day fair that combines design, art, food, and music together in an all day event meant for everyone to just hang out, mingle, and enjoy the view.
2. How did you come up with the idea for the fair?
We got the idea for DAFF just by simply combining every aspect we loved in Shanghai. Our company specialized, at first, in outdoor/day time electronic music parties where everyone could dance and enjoy the sun. A lot of our usual crowd were all part of the creative industry, designers, artists, chefs, DJs, band members, videographers, etc.
So when Wharf (the venue) approached us with their great outdoor space, we decided it was the perfect opportunity to gather everyone and everything we love- the creative lot, the sun, the view, the day partying- and make a fair out of it.
3. What was turnout like last year? Expectations for this year?
The turnout last year was over 1,500 people. A lot from the creative industry but also a lot of families coming to peruse and learn about different brands. We are expecting around 2,500+ people this year. We’ve done a lot more pre-event advertising and preparation for this DAFF than the last, so we are definitely expecting a huge turnout.
4. What are some of the main highlights event attendees should be looking forward to this year?
Some of the main highlights for this year would be a live art battle- where 5-10 artists have 2 hours to compete in a contest. We will give them each a blank canvas and supplies, and at the end, 3 art editors from the media will choose a winner, and we will also choose a crowd favorite to win one of many prizes.
This year, we have Evisu, Vans, Urbanears, Frau Ana, and The Source sponsoring DAFF. We will have many giveaways on site such as Urbanears headphones, Vans shoes, EnjoyShanghai VIP booklets, etc. Idle Beats will be there doing live t-shirt screen printing and we are working on a motion-photo booth as well.
5. Tell me a little bit more about the venue.
The venue is Wharf 1846. It is right along the river overlooking the entire Pudong skyline. We are expecting over 50 vendors so the fair will stretch out much farther than last time (since we only had 30 vendors in September).
When: May 5, 2pm-midnight
Where: Wharf 1846 Bund Promenade, 601 Waima Lu, near Maojiayuan Lu
