Kim Lee, the estranged wife of Crazy English founder Li Yang, has expressed her frustration with China’s legal system in an exclusive interview with Netease, saying Chinese law has failed to protect her from domestic violence.
“Li Yang is not afraid of law at all, since the law “can do nothing about him,” she said in the interview.
Along with her lawyer Qi Lianfeng, she told Netease that Li Yang had hidden at least 23 properties from her, denied all allegations of domestic violence in court and had been trying to annul their marriage.
“On the day the court opened, there were seven people and we all heard the defense plea,” she said. “I could not understand why this lawyer [of Li Yang] could say such a lie, saying ‘it is not domestic violence.'”
No law against domestic violence
Kim says Li Yang’s practice could at least send him 10 years behind bars in the United States.
“Once in 2006, he flew all the way from Guangzhou to Beijing to beat me. I was pregnant at that time. This planned behavior could result in a jail term of at least 10 years in the US. It was even worse than domestic violence. That’s why I wanted it totally open when the trial began. I wanted all the media, and everyone to see and hear it out in the open” she said.
Major obstacles presented themselves in suing Li Yang, however. Kim says Chinese police could simply find no laws against domestic violence. “It’s not their fault,” she was quick to add. “It’s because the relevant laws aren’t there.”
Doctors at three hospitals Kim Lee went to also did not know how to write her a proof to show that she had been suffering from domestic violence. “What would it be like for other Chinese women suffering from domestic violence?” she asked.
“They [Australian Broadcasting Cooperation] asked me why Chinese laws are so poor,” said Kim. “They simply couldn’t understand how nothing could happen after the husband beats wife in China. They wondered why I didn’t just return to the United States, but mostly they were concerned that there is no law against domestic violence in China.”
“Just a small mistake”
Despite Li Yang’s alleged domestic violence which had appalled the Chinese public, some students are still supporting him, with even one saying, “Teacher, you are awesome. You just made a little mistake.”
“I am surprised that the girl could say such words. It’s a very serious problem,” said Kim in response. “Domestic violence is a very serious problem, but Li Yang was able to tell his students as a teacher that it is not so serious for a man to beat a woman. That makes me anxious.”
“I know Li Yang has been telling his students that only success matters, everything else doesn’t.”
Kim also took a swipe at Li Yang’s English-teaching methods. “He’s been telling students that through the learning of English, we can defeat the Japanese and the Americans and things like that. That’s an inferiority complex. You shouldn’t be belittling foreign cultures, but I see lots of school principals applauding Li Yang’s ideas.”
