Asia’s biggest indoor stadium, the Green Island Sports Centre in Shenyang, built in 2003, was demolished on June 3, 2012. Sources say that the government plans on using the new space as a Convention and Exhibition Centre.
This demolition project alone set the government back by 3 million RMB. While most of the stadium is already torn down, completely removing all traces of it will take several months more.
The Green Island Sports Centre was 455,000 square metres, capable of holding up to 30,000 people. During the demolition, people lingered around the site for five hours to bid farewell to the stadium. One bystander, Mr. Liu Yudi has said that the Green Island Stadium has made Shenyang fans proud, as it was the world’s first FIFA-certified indoor soccer stadium and Asia’s largest soccer field.
