A controversial photo of graduates from Guangzhou has been making the rounds on the internet. Graduates from Jinan University are shown holding a banner which reads, “Jinan University advertisement class, you have fucked my youth.” Behind the banner each student is holding up cards with their wishes on it. Most of the wishes are normal, such as wishing for a wealthy wife while some are more twisted like wishing for rape.
The picture has caused some Chinese recruiters to blacklist the university causing an uproar on the web. Peking University professor Kong Qingdong wrote that while he was a visiting professor at Jinan he “felt that the quality of the students was not bad.” The microbloging community has mostly rushed to the defense of the university students claiming that it is unfair to judge their character based solely on a photo. Others have mentioned that there is no need to exaggerate the effect of a graduation photo and the criticism reflects that China still lacks a sense of social tolerance.
There is a silver lining to the story though. Professor Yong He claimed that he admired the students and, “If the students have the courage to take such an edgy picture, they probably have the ability to endure a variety of criticism.”
