35 tons of golden needle mushrooms carrying a carcinogenic citric acid were found in Ningde in Fujian province. Law enforcement officers seized these mushrooms from a Fuzhou food processing factory. The mushrooms were smoked, with bamboo shoots growing out of them. They are said to contain an industrial citric acid that is carcinogenic.
Health officials say that consuming a lot of food containing this citric acid over a long period of time leads to the decrease of calcium in the body, or a condition known medically as hypocalcaemia. These acids damage the nervous system, cause allergic reactions, and can lead to cancer.
