Every few days our team will scour Shanghai’s dining scene for scrumptious dishes that’ll fill your belly without emptying your savings. Not to discriminate, we’ll search everywhere from bicycle carts to chic venues with twenty-course tasting menus, knowing that any spot could have the next Dish of the Day.
Yes, even Chinese food nationalists like us sometimes get a hankering for a burger, and when we do, we go for the Montana Burger at Blue Frog (85RMB). We know, everybody’s talked about this burger to death, even analyzing it at the microgastronomic level – ground sirloin-ribeye mix, 75% lean, 25% fat, locally processed, yadayada – so we’ll keep it short.
What you essentially have is an 8-inch tall sandwich stacked precariously like a fast food Jenga with mondo onion rings, cheddar cheese, lettuce, bacon, tomato, BBQ sauce and a beef patty as thick as a hockey puck; which, unlike most Shanghai burgers doesn’t also taste like one.
For us, the Montana’s a checklist of everything you’d want in a burger. Flinstones portions. Check. Picking up the burger and having juice cascade onto your plate. Check. Standard condiments like lettuce and tomato, plus ones you really want to eat like bacon and fried onion rings. Check. Fries. Check. Tenfold increase in the likelihood of you getting a balloon angioplasty before you’re 50. Check.
The one disclaimer is that the burger’s sheer height makes it impossible to nab all condiments in one bite, so unless you can unhinge your lower jaw like a python, you’ve gotta remove the onion rings and munch on them separately.
And if we had to nitpick, we’d say it’s a shame they won’t prepare it medium rare (health concerns or some bullshit). But all things considered, it’s a decent hunk of ground beef in Shanghai, a veritable bermuda triangle for good hamburgers.
So if you’re bleary-eyed American expat in burger withdrawal or just somebody in need of an edible burger, click out of this window, power-off, and head on over. And remember that on Mondays after 4pm, you can get two burgers for the price of one.
