The NZ teacher who gained nationwide notoriety in China for throwing a 5-year-old girl into the swimming pool has been alleged to have appeared in a medical advertisement posing as a lab coat-clad doctor for a private Shandong hospital.
The video of an otolaryngology ad titled “The Minimally Invasive FE Procedure for Sinusitis” was first posted on an online forum by someone who claims that the Kiwi, who has been named in Chinese media reports only by his last name, Phillips, is the actor identified in the commercial as “Dr Markus”, a German official representative for the pioneer innovation.
Viewers pointed out the uncanny resemblance between the grey-haired man in the footage and Phillips. It is also reported a former student of his identified the so-called German expert as Mr Phillips himself.
Phillips could be held accountable for false and illegal medical advertisement-associated responsibility if local officials follow the strict letter of the law.
According to an official advertising regulatory notice issued by Shandong Administration for Industry and Commerce, it is illegal to cast an actor or a member of the public for multiple roles to promote supplements or medical devices in false advertisements.
Staff at the alleged hospital were not immediately available to confirm if the German expert Markus was Phillips.
