The Chinese Women’s Gymnastics team — which captured the gold medal in 2008 — failed to repeat the performance in London this week, slipping into fourth place behind the Romanian squad.
The team finished with 174.430 points, just 1.984 points behind Romania and over nine points behind the United States, which won its first gold since 1996.
The team blamed the disappointing finish on injuries and a rowdy British crowd.
When it finally became apparent that Romania would win the battle for third place, four of the five teammates were shown dissolving into tears. The sole dry-eyed teammate was He Kexin, who was at the center of the age controversy back in 2008.
He told media she didn’t cry because the rest of the team was already crying. “And besides,” she said, “if I cry, I will mess up my make-up.”
