Yunnan Amber, a “Great Leap” forward for Chinese micro brews: Yunnan Lager, China’s first collaborative craft beer is now on tap at Boxing Cat brewery. The micro-brew is the brainchild of both Great Leap Brewing’s Carl Setzer, and Shanghai craft beer pioneer, Michael Jordan of Boxing Cat, and is infused with dianhong black tea. Jordan describes the beer as smooth with light hops that allow the tea’s distinctly floral notes to express themselves. The first 1,000 liter batch, brewed at Boxing Cat, is available for about two weeks or so until supplies run out, so hoof it on over and grab a mug of Chinese craft-brewed suds.
Shanghai Restaurant week open for booking: We’re a tad late on this (since booking actually began on August 15), but for those who didn’t know, booking is open for Shanghai Restaurant week (September 3-9), an occasion where you sample 3-course lunch and dinner menus in Bocca, Ming Court, Sir Elly’s and other top venues for as low as 78RMB for lunch and 168RMB for dinner. Book at www.restaurantweek.cn, which also lists menu options and prices. Hurry though, places are getting booked fast.
Revival of Shook’s 88RMB lunch menu: Speaking of restaurant deals, the lunch deal at Pan-Asian eatery Shook, is back! Monday-Friday, between 11:30am and 2:30pm, you can get two lunch courses with coffee or tea for only 88RMB (add 35RMB for an extra course). On offer are what we’d describe as a grab bag of the things you’d most like to eat from each cuisine including phad thai, grilled sea bass, Malaysian beef rendang (a stew with spices and coconut), and a steak sandwich, which is our favorite. Think Philly cheese steak except with juicy slices of tenderloin, a real baguette, fries with mayonnaise and salsa verde instead of gloopy, yellow squeeze-bottle cheese. Coconut curry lovers will also fall for the beef rendang. All in all, not a bad deal for a restaurant in the Swatch Art Peace Hotel on the Bund. Note: Not all items are available everyday as menus rotate.
