Online rumors now swirling online have it that Liu Xiaobo, the imprisoned dissident and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, has been allowed medical parole and will be freed.
According to Hong Kong newspaper Mingpao, the rumours first went online on Twitter and were widely retweeted. According to the grapevine, Liu Xia, the wife of Liu Xiaobo, was on her way to Zhaoyang, Liaoning province to see her husband.
However, both Liu Xiaoxuan, Liu Xiaobo’s younger brother and Yang Jianli, a long-time friend of the Liu family both denied having heard such reports.
New Tang Dynasty TV, a Falungong-affiliated broadcaster, earlier reported that Liu Xiaobo had been friend, quoting a friend of Liu Xia, but the report has since been removed.
Liu Xiaobo was sentenced to prison for his role in putting together Charter 08, a manifesto signed by 350 Chinese intellectuals and activists in February 2010. He was previously rumored to be freed last April.
