Midweek Music Preview is a rundown of all the events happening on stages across Shanghai. On the docket this week: Discover exotic instruments with Stranded Horse, inflict injuries to your neck with Beijing metalists Miserable Faith, and find out what saxophonist Alec Haavik can do with his weapon of choice when paired with
a) the jazzy Electro Alliance or b) the Taiwanese queen of female hip hop DJs. If you prefer more delicate classical instruments, we have a true European gem for you this week: The masters of cello rock themselves, Apocalyptica, play one show at MAO. And if that’s still not enough, head over to our calendar for more.
Stranded Horse @ Yuyintang
French kora player Stranded Horse aka Yann Tambour tours 4 Chinese cities and hits Shanghai’s Yuyintang to perform his unique and smooth blend of guitars and the kora, a 21-string bridge-harp mainly played by people in West Africa. There are only a handful or so Western musicians who have mastered playing this instrument, and Yann Tambour is one of them. Check out the label’s website for a free song download!

Apocalyptica @ MAO Livehouse
Apocalyptica is what happens when two genres like metal and classical music that seem like fire and ice at first glimpse are put in the right hands, that is, classically trained cellistst from Finland, Europe’s metal heart. The cello-playing guys have won a strong fanbase in Europe with their classical reinterpretations of metal and rock favourites as well as original compositions, collaborated with other famous acts and even performed live on stage with genre primus Metallica on their 30th anniversary concert in 2011.
