Midweek Music Preview is a rundown of all the events happening on stages across Shanghai. On the docket this week: International acts en masse with Maroon 5, Sarah Connor from Germany, Swedish rockers Dynazty, and classical musicians from France and Italy. Yuyintang has Chinese rock, pop and grunge on the menue on Friday and Sunday night, and if you want something completely different instead: Watch catwomen and catmen in tight catsuits, singing and dancing about their feline lives in Cats, the musical.And if that’s still not enough, head over to our calendar for more.
Cats @ Lyric Theatre (Shanghai Grand Theatre)
Cats is one of those big classics that even people who have zero interest in musicals know from hearsay. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical about a bunch of kitties has been an award-winning success story since its debut show in London more than 21 years ago: Played in over 26 countries and translated in 14 languages, Cats is one of the longest-running musicals. Grand Theatre shows the Chinese version of the feline street adventures. Show goes on till 10 October. 7:15pm Tues-Fri, 1:30pm Sat-Sun.

Salvatore Accardo Violin Recital @ Shanghai Oriental Art Centre
Italian violinist and conductor Salvatore Accardo is particularly noted for his interpretations of Paganini, J. S. Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, contemporary works, chamber music, and opera conducting. Signore Accardo will be accompanied on the piano by Laura Manzini.

Shanghai Calling @ Yuyintang
Yuyintang tries to make the start of the new semester a bit more bearable for all the students out there: For only 20RMB, you get a 3-band live package this Friday night. On stage for you: Girls like mystery (rock), Stegosaurus (rock) and Candyshop (pop).

Sarah Connor Live @ Yunfeng Theater
Germany’s pop siren and tabloid celebrity No. 1 gives her fans in China the chance to see her live on stage. The soul and pop diva has not only been one of the most successful solo acts in Germany in the last decade, but also came to fame in Europe and beyond, as this Shanghai gig successfully demonstrates. You are wondering why the name sounds so familiar although you have no idea who that singer is? Remember the chick that gets her brains blown out by Arnold Schwarzenegger right at the beginning of the first Terminator movie? Bingo! The Terminator heroine chased by killer robots from the future is also called Sarah Connor. Expect pop, R’n B and Frau Connors signature soul balads, carried by her powerful voice.

Dynazty Live @ Yuyintang
The band with the chinoise name is actually a heavy metal group from Sweden, and thus the only foreign act at Yuyintang this week. The guys are on an extensive China tour named after their newest album “Sultans of Sin”. And despite the far distance they had to travel, the concert is completely for free! Nicotin is a band from Wuhan, currently on a 10 city tour through China. Yes, looks like the guys are smokers, but on stage they’ll exchange cigarette butts for guitars, bass, drums and mike. Sound: grunge.

Maroon5 @ Mercedes Benz Arena
The 5 guys that unmistakably completed the transition from pop rockers to rock poppers with their 4th and latest album come to prove that they’ve still got Mick Jagger’s and whoever’s moves. They play in the massive Mercedes Benz Arena, but due to heir high popolarity, you better hurry up to get your ticket. The official after show party will take place at The Apartment, starting 10pm.
