Atrociously pretentious French clothing brand Zadig et Voltaire is entering the hospitality business, with plans to open a hotel on Paris’ Left Bank in 2014. Said hotel will be very exclusive, and by exclusive we mean exclusionary, and by exclusionary we mean full-on racist:
This was a project dear to our hearts. We are going to select guests. It won’t be open to Chinese tourists, for example. There is a lot of demand in Paris — many people are looking for quiet hotels with a certain privacy.
So said founder and owner Thierry Gillier to fashion mag WWD, though the quote on that site has since been amended to read “busloads of tourists”. Thankfully, this being the internet, gaffes are permanent and racist gaffes even more so. Danwei founder Jeremy Goldkorn managed to grab a screenshot from Vogue UK before Gillier’s words were made more palatable for a non-fashionista/racist audience:
Gillier may wish to remember that China is quickly becoming the largest market for luxury goods in the world with Chinese consumers expected to be spending $27bn per year by 2013.
