A pregnant woman, surnamed Liu, was attacked in Shenzhen on Tuesday by a couple who claimed to have lost their iPad in her store. Ms Liu later suffered a miscarriage due to a kick to the stomach delivered by one of the angry iPad owners.
Ms Liu’s owns a store that sells toiletries in a Shenzhen mall. At around 3pm on Tuesday a couple came into the store to browse, but left without buying anything. Two hours later they returned to the store and told the shop assistant that they had lost an iPad whilst there earlier.
Eventually, after a fruitless search, Ms Liu’s sister, who runs a shop next door, asked the couple, “Are you looking for the white iPad I saw in your hands as you left earlier?”
The couple then went to other stores in the area hunting for their lost tablet but, after half an hour, returned to Ms Liu’s shop and demanded “Who fucking saw us walking out of here with the iPad?”
A heated argument broke out between the couple, Ms Liu, her sister, and the shop assistant, during which the man allegedly yelled, “If you took my iPad, you fucking die!”
“And if I didn’t take your iPad, your mother will die?” Ms Liu’s sister retorted.
At this point the man rushed toward the sisters, another shopkeeper, Ms Peng, who had been attracted by the commotion, tried to block him, saying “She’s pregnant, don’t hit her!”
“So what if she’s pregnant? I’ll hit her anyway!” The man responded as his partner also joined the fray, landing a flying kick to Ms Liu’s stomach.
Neighbours had called the police, by the time they arrived on the scene Ms Liu was in great pain and had to be rushed to the hospital. It was later determined that the fetus’s heart had stopped and a medically induced miscarriage was necessary.
The iPad owners have been detained while police determine whether they can be charged with causing the death of the fetus or merely with assault and battery on Ms Liu.
