Sad news out of Guangzhou, where a 50-year-old man, surnamed Cheng, is offering to sell his legs for 200,000 RMB each in order to draw attention to the failure of his former employer, a bank, to pay for injuries sustained while working way back in 2007.
Sweat dripping down his cheeks due to the hot sun, he sat motionless, hand over a pair of silver-white crutches. His trouser leg was pulled up, exposing a bandaged wound on his knees from which a strong smell gave off.
Cheng’s knee was injured seven times in succession while working in the archive department of a Guangzhou bank in 2007. He underwent surgery but, during the postoperative rehabilitation period, was forced to return to work, aggravating the initial injury. The bank refuses to recognise Cheng’s injuries as being work-related, he has sued his former employer twice but to no avail.
