Billionaire philanthropist and friend to the environment, Chen Guangbiao, has followed through on his promise to buy new, Chinese cars for the 43 owners of Japanese cars damaged last month during nationwide anti-Japan protests.
Chen, who is prone to extravagant displays, held a rally in Nanjing to announce his giveaway and to promote his green Cycling Initiative which seeks to encourage less people to drive (while at the same time giving away free cars, this doesn’t make a whole lot of sense).
Update #1: Chinese media have cast doubt on Chen’s “giveaway”, which they claim was just an elaborate marketing stunt for Chinese carmaker Geely and Chen’s organic food products. A disproportionate amount of car “owners” were attractive young women, who, when asked, had no idea how their original, Japanese cars had been damaged.
