So it’s the weekend and you’re bored, because your job deprives you of all your imagination and creativity during the week [Ed: hmmm?]. Well have a look at Weekendist, and get some inspiration for free! On Friday we have a party combo with Shotaro Maeda rocking Shelter (acid house, funk, disco), Dada (techno) and Zeal (Hip hop Hijack). On Saturday, there’s an afternoon BBQ at Hard Day’s Night with live music and the Beijing Beatles on stage later that night. Beaugeste Photo Gallery opens a new exhibition with old Kodachrome photos by Bruno Barbey, and Perry’s is wooing us with cheap drinks, fun, and greasy food. Zeal fires laser beams to house music – and hopefully misses your eyes. And then on Sunday: a free afternoon screening of ‘Little Miss Sunshine‘ at the Geisha! And if that’s still not enough, head over to our calendar for more.
REDBOX @ The Shelter
Shotaro Maeda, a Tokyo underground icon, leaves his signature Eden party (which is totally unrelated to the venue in Shanghai) for this weekend and comes to Shanghai. He’ll blast out deep house, minimal, old school house and nu disco. Support by Carlos Gibbs, Razor and Kim Laughton, who will mix in some funk and disco tunes.

CHINA in KODACHROME @ Beaugeste Photo Gallery
For the first time ever, Magnum photographer Bruno Barbey will exhibit pictures taken between 1973-1980. Discover the China of a time long before it’s been the place to be for irritating ex-pats. The decade on display marks the late phase of the Cultural Revolution and the beginning of the reform and opening era for the country – captured in the brilliant and warm colours of Kodachrome. Opening from 3-8pm. The show is on until 10 February, 2013.
Free // 11am-6pm (Weekends) // Beaugeste Photo Gallery // Lane 210 Taikang road Building 5, Studio 519 (泰康路210弄5号楼519室)
Afternoon BBQ & Beijing Beatles Live @ Hard Day’s Night
A night of 100% Rock’n Roll awaits you at Hard Day’s Night. Early birds get in for free and can spend the afternoon devouring the all-you-can-eat BBQ buffet: meat, seafood, salads, etc., plus two pints of Tiger beer await you for 168RMB. After 7pm, the entrance fee is 60RMB including one drink. Live Acoustic music from 5pm-8pm. After 8, the rock’n roll night kicks off, and after 9, The Beijing Beatles will take over the stage playing all your favourite classic Beatles hits.

Buckets, Pizza, Beer and Burgers @ Perry’s
Where to start the night? You’re not in the mood for one of the bling bling venues that smell of botox and pretension and need something else? At Perry’s you’ll find it all, from graffiti-covered toilets that compete with the OLD old Logo’s irresistibly dirty urinals (i.e., they could be in any Western capital’s subway station) to cheap drinks and food. And of course, the audience that usually comes with it: lots of students (both western and local) and other young and uncomplicated folks, and the vibe is friendly, fun and relaxed. Burgers rob your wallet of some 25 kuai or so and are bigger than those at Windows, and they even have quite decent pizza for 40RMB. Drinks are also cheap, especially their signature metal buckets, which hold 500ml of mix drinks for 25-40RMB.
Opens 11am, gets busy around 7pm // Perry’s // No. 1139 Kaixuan Lu, near Anshun Lu (凯旋路1139号， 附近安顺路)
Evolution @ Zeal
Zeal again on the same weekend? Well, different strokes for different folks. Today it’s not all about hip hop, but house music. Evolution comes wrapped up in a futuristic outfit, with special cocktails and dancers shooting laser beams out of their robotic outfits. Sounds a bit like Daft Punk – or at least Zeal’s own interpretation of the legendary French duo.
Free before Midnight, 100 RMB after for guys // 9pm // Zeal // 6/F, 22 Zhongshan Dong Er Lu, near Xin Yongan Lu (中山东二路22号6楼，近新永安路)
Sunday Screening Club @ The Geisha
Every Sunday, you can climb your sore bodies up to the 3rd floor of the Geisha, and instead of more bang bang music and booze, board games and movies await you. And if you’re still in need of alcoholic refreshment, never fear. This week, Geisha is showing the modern classic ‘Little Miss Sunshine‘.
Free // 3:30pm (movie starts at 4pm) // The Geisha // No. 390 Shanxi Nan Lu, near Fuxing Lu (陕西南路390号， 近复兴路)
