The People’s Daily, China’s paper-of-record, has published a slideshow on its website, both in English and Chinese, of the ‘beautiful scenery’ of the 18th Party Congress. What is said beautiful scenery you ask? Women.
Anthony Tao at Beijing Cream is being generous when he says the title of the slideshow is probably due to “mistranslation”. The purpose of the photos is clear regardless of the captions or heading: “Phwoar! Some hot pieces of ass at the Party Congress, am I right fellas?”
The women photographed include several accomplished professionals, from journalists to PLA officers, all reduced to pieces of meat for the Peoples’ Daily photo-desk to leer at.
China watchers on Twitter are not impressed:
Re that @kemc piece: of many demeaning People’s Daily photo galleries, I think “beautiful scenery” may be the worst. Title says it all.

However, as one commenter on Beijing Cream points out, it could be worse:
“You can tell it’s not reposted from Xinhua because the women are all fully clothed.”
